      Not a scratch on Alpen Light

      Right, I was forced into the Special K Double Milk Chocolate bar purchase because my local shop was out of Alpen Light bars. I needed something for my snack that was roughly in line with Slimming World diet and this was the nearest I could get. I am a huge fan of Alplen Light for their taste, texture and density so was hoping the Special K bar would be the same.

      Stats first: - Box of 6 for £1.99 (on offer). Each bar is 20g and provides 80 calories or 2g fat, all good so far. The description is of a rice and wheat cereal bar with milk choc pieces dipped in milk choocolate, sounds scrummy for 80 calories I thought!

      Once opened the bar is indeed cereal, choc pieces and with a one side coating of chocolate but that is as good as it gets. The bar is very sweet to eat and the chocolate is quite powdery in taste and fairly much covers the taste of the cereal element. On top of that there is none of the density to the bar of Alpen light. The bar is very sparse and fairly airy once broken in half and in one chew it is gone, so really not very fulfilling or satisfying. The high level of sweetness also left me with a serious sweet craving following eating it.

      Disappointing product.

      Nasty!

      I have just been unfortunate enough to try to eat one of these bars!! I say unfortunate because I am now sitting nursing a broken tooth! I can't see my dentist until to-morrow so I will probably be in pain for most of this evening. All this because I thought that Special K was a name to be trusted in the world of the 'I need to lose a few pounds and eat healthier market' When I bit into this bar, I made the above 'chewing a brick' comment to my partner, but I did not expect it to actually break my teeth. I am devastated as I have nice teeth, which I look after, and now have a broken tooth that can be seen if I smile, not that I will be smiling for quite some time. If you value your teeth, do not eat these bars. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! I would actually give this product no stars at all if possible, because I love cereal bars and have tried and enjoyed several makes and flavors, especially chocolate ones. Even without the teeth breaking qualities, I found the bar had only a teeny tiny amount of chocolate chips and even less flavor. All in all a nightmare in a bar!

      A nice snack bar by Special K

      I've gone through a period of eating a lot of Special K cereal and have grown to really like it. I love the taste of their original rice flakes and thought that these cereal bars would be a handy snack or alternative to breakfast when I'm short on time. I bought these from Tesco on offer at £1.50, but they usually retail at the price of £2.12.

      These Special K bars are chocolate chip flavour and come in packs of 6. They are stored in a cardboard box and individually wrapped in foil packets within that. They're perfect for taking out and about with you, or if you need to grab something on the go, as the foil wrappers keep it fresh.

      The bar is not quite as I was expecting, the base is Special K flakes, but they are crumbled up and then held together with a syrupy substance. I also spotted some cereal grains and there is a sprinkling of chocolate chips on top. It appears pretty standard and looks like most other cereal bars of this sort. The smell is very appealing.

      On biting into the bar you get a nice crunchy texture, the bar is very chewy and I sometimes end up with a sore jaw from chewing away at it! I guess this is a result of the cereal and syrup combination, as it gets a bit sticky when you're eating this. The bars are very light and very, very sweet. They have a lovely flavour but unless you have a sweet tooth you could find them a bit sickly. This is a welcome sugar boost if you're on a diet but still want to limit your calorie intake.

      The chocolate chips were nice, but they are just stuck onto the top and not very secure. A lot of the time when I've been eating these bars, the chocolate chips have just fallen off and rolled away when I've been taking a bite. Maybe this is a trick to keep the calories low!

      The bars are quite small and they only contain 83 calories per 21g bar. These are fine as a quick snack or as a replacement for biscuits on your tea break, but it was totally inadequate as a substitute for breakfast cereal in the morning. A bar can satisfy my hunger for a short while and helps to bridge the gap between meals. The fat content is low for a snack of this sort, but the sugar content is very high - over a third of the bar in fact!

      All in all I think this is a good snack item, it's tasty and good for a bit of a sweet treat even when you're watching your weight. Shame they're not a bit more filling but they're low in calories and fat so it's a much better option than choccy biccys!

        cereal bars from Kelloggs special K

        I recently wrote a very positive review about special K apricot and peach cereal bars. Having enjoyed these so much I decided to try the chocolate chip version and had high hopes for a similar, positive experience.

        Like the apricot and peach bars, the chocolate chip bars come in a cardboard box containing 6 individually wrapped cereal bars. They are made by the giant Kellogg's and the information on the front of the box tells me that each bar contains 83 calories. However I was a bit shocked to read that each bar also contains 7 grams of sugar, that's 8% of your recommended daily requirement. As these bars are marketed as a healthy option I think this is very misleading!

        However let's move on to the all important taste test. On opening a bar I was quite impressed to see lots of visible chocolate chips. The bar has a rustic appearance and looks appealing as far as I'm concerned. However here the attraction ends! The bar is very hard and dry. I had been expecting it to have a chewy consistency like the apricot version but was very disappointed! The bar is so sweet that any flavour is undetectable. I really couldn't even taste the chocolate chips. Not only that but after I had struggled to finish the bar I was left with a horrible synthetic aftertaste in my mouth. My children also gave these the thumbs down, so they must be bad!

        If you would like to try these then they are on offer in Asda at the moment at £1 for a box of six bars. As far as I can see the usual selling price is over £2. I really can't recommend these as I thought they were awful!

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

          Don't bother with this.

          From time to time, in between eating chocolate and cake, I do have these impulses to try to be healthy and loose some weight around my tummy. And I also admit to succumbing to the persuasive nature of advertisements on the telly.

          So, in an attempt to loose a dress size, or at least gain a flatter tummy, I bought two boxes of these Special K cereal bars and started on the 'two bowls of cereal and only Special K snacks in between' diet. I wish I hadn't bothered. These cereal bars are the worst things I have tasted in a long time.

          There are six in a box and each come individually wrapped in that silver backed plastic that you can't see through. This is to disguise the fact that the bar is much smaller in length than the box leads you to expect. When you unwrap the bar there is a small sprinkling of chocolate chips across the top of the cereal stuff (which the packet tells you is rice and wheat) and you think 'yum!' The rest of the bar is a nice golden colour which also makes you think you are in for a nice moist sticky treat.

          Wrong!

          The cereal bar is quite fat and tall, even though it is short in length, so you have to open you mouth quite wide to get your teeth around it to bite. Then you discover that it is also quite hard, so biting involves quite a bit of effort - perhaps this is an attempt at getting you to use more calories, sort of an exercise while you eat technique. This effort and expending of calories continues as you eat the bar because you have to chew quite a lot on each bite before swallowing.

          Chewing for a long time might be worth it if the taste was nice, but it really isn't. I don't recall ever having eaten cardboard but I imagine it would taste something like a Special K cereal bar. All the chocolate chips in the world cannot disguise the fact that the rest of this crunchy stuff masquerading as food has no taste.

          It says on the packet that there are 83 calories in each bar. I'm sure there are tastier and healthier ways of consuming 83 calories. Perhaps someone could let me know what they are because I won't be buying these again.

            A good buy

            I have been trying to watch my weight for the last few months as i have a bridesmaid dress to fit into in April and wanted to find something that was low-carlorie that i could snack on in between meals. I already eat special K cereal and quite enjoy it and so when I came across these special K chocolate chip bars I thought they would be ideal for me, especially as i love chocolate. They are rice and wheat cereal bars that contain chocolate chips. Each bar is 21g and contains 83 calories so just 4% of your daily calorie allowance and just 1.5 grams of fat.

            So i tried them and have not stopped buying them since. I really like them. I love the fact that i can really taste the chocolate in them, it gives me my chocolate fix without having to eat lots of calories. I find that if i do get hungry between meals then one of these will keep me going. Like any cereal bar really they are handy sizes so you can just put one in your bag so they are at hand whenever.

            Price wise i think they are similar to other brands of cereal bars, maybe a bit more expensive. They cost £2.12 for 6 bars so about 35p per bar, which i think is ok.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

            A rather disappointing buy and I expected more from the brand.

            Being a fan of Kellogg's Special K cereal range (when I am trying to shift a few pounds) I thought I would give their chocolate chip bars a try as I thought this would be a convenient snack to have to hand to fill the gap between breakfast and lunch or lunch and dinner.

            You get six 21g bars per pack and each bar contains only 83 calories (which equates to 4% of your recommended daily intake). Tesco is currently selling this product for £1.50 (with a saving of 62p) so if you want to try them, now would be a good time. They also sell the following flavours: Original, apple & pear; peach & apricot and fruits of the forest.

            It is always a lure to me when anything containing chocolate comes in under 100 calories! They are also low in fat and more importantly saturated fat so not too hard on the heart although with nearly half of the carbohydrate amount being made up of sugar that aspect is not so good if you are looking for an ultra healthy choice.

            My opinion:

            The picuture of the product on the box looks good enough to eat (surprise, surprise) but not quite so appealing in real life but that's advertising for you. I found the taste to be very disappointing. They were almost bone crunchingly dry and the taste to me seemed slightly artificial and overly sweet. Although you are getting the goodness of the Special K cereal, there seem to be a lot of other added flavours which give it that 'sweetner' taste which I particularly dislike. The chocolate chips were nice though but then again we are talking about chocolate which to me is pretty good however it is presented!

            I will not be buying this particular bar again as I think there are much tastier ones on the market and I would not recommend this overall

            All in all a rather disappointing product. I expected more from this brand.

            Thanks for reading. x

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

              Avoid.

              I don't normally write reviews on food, but I feel compelled to on this joke of a product. Special K in cereal form is both healthy and pleasant to eat. Naturally then, one thinks: "A Special K bar plus chocolate chip must be the best of both words!". Absolutely not.

              I cannot state strongly enough how bad these bars taste. They are rock hard, stuck together like glue, and the chocolate is tasteless. They are an absolute waste of money, and it beggars belief that they are still out on the shelves. Maybe i've just had a succession of bad batches - but I doubt it. Other reviews are just as critical, and I can understand why.

              The worst part is, they normally come in packs of six, so once you try one, you've still got 5 to either throw away or struggle through. It is seriously a chore to eat them.

              For cereal bars, there are plenty of other alternatives - from Squares to Kellogs Frosties and Rice Krispies. They are all decent enough, especially Squares.

              Kellogs Chocolate Chip cereal bar is nothing other than cardboard though - devoid of taste, texture or pleasantness. Avoid. Simple as.

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

              a good product if you're on a diet

              Kellogg's special k chocolate chip bar is a great tasty low calorie bar; it's only 83 calories which is good compared to a bar of chocolate for example and low in fat too (only 1.5 grams). So it's an ideal replacement if you are on a diet (like me) but it's tasty enough to enjoy if you're not.
              The tasty isn't as good as a full fat treat but you can't have it both ways can you. It is quite chocolatey in taste and is relatively filling considering its size. The texture is different from the special k original bar (cherry) which is much more moist and chewy this bar was a bit harder and a bit brittle; I bit into it and quite a bit fell into my lap, it was like the ingredients didn't really want to go together so they ran it over with a steam roller and squished it together.

              The packaging is attractive and shows what's inside and it has a lot of nutritional information so if you're on a certain type of diet and need to something you'll probably find it.

              It is a nice bar which is great if you want to slim down or if you don't want to spoil your appetite. I recommend it but would say perhaps try the original first as it's my personal favourite.

              Give them a miss

              Kelloggs Special K chocolate chip bars are rice and wheat cereal bars with mik chocolate pieces.

              I bought the Special K bars as part of my continuing search to find a tasty alternative to chocolate after putting on a few pounds over Christmas. These were on special offer at my local Somerfield's and I paid 89p for a box of six bars which I think is half price. They are only 83 calories per bar which is far less than a Mars bar. They looked good in the picture on the box.

              ~~~ Packaging ~~~
              They are packaged in a small cardboard box which is mainly white with the familiar red Kelloggs logo and large 'K' on the front and a picture of the cereal bar. The nutritional value is printed at the top right of the box. The box is easy to open with a handy pull down flap so you can get the bars out then store the box back in your cupboard.
              The bars are individually wrapped so they are ideal to slip into your pocket or put in lunchboxes. The wrappers are easy to undo by tearing the top.
              ~~~ My opinion ~~~

              I usually like cereal bars and I enjoy Special K breakfast cereal so I was expecting these to be quite a treat. I was disappointed. They were not chewy and moist at all but somewhat hard and dry. They did not melt in my mouth as some other brands but were brittle and crumbly. They were quite difficult to bite into and in my opinion certainly not suitable for very small children or very elderly people who may have dental problems.
              The taste was bland and I could not really taste the chocolate at all.
              Although these were a bargain price I won't be buying any more.

              I certainly don't think they are worth the full price which is around £1.85p.

              Give them a miss!

                Advantages

                Disadvantages

                Perfect for dieters.

                I'm one of those people that's always trying to cut down on the pounds, yet I have an intolerable sweet tooth which always leads me to the biscuit tin or worse, the chocolate cupboard!

                I discovered these little beauties when there was no chocolate left in the chocolate cupboard, but I was desperate for a fix, thinking they wouldn't be so bad, since they're chocolate chipped.

                I was not wrong.

                I now rely on these for when I'm dieting, as they're only 84 calories a bar, and 1.5 weight watchers points, which makes it perfect for when I've got an irresistible sweet tooth lurking.

                They taste like a cereal bar, with chocolate chips, but funnily enough, its actually a lot better for you than the average cereal bar, which is obviously a huge plus in my books when dieting.

                I'd say these are perfect as a biscuit or chocolate bar substitute to any keen dieter, they're one of my favourite low-fat snack treats for when I'm trying to be good, because if snacking is a must, it might as well be low fat snacks.

                Especially when they taste as good as this!

                Advantages

                Disadvantages

                A swing and a miss by Kellogg's

                I often have a few cereal bars in my store cupboard to snack on now and then as I am trying to cut down the amount of chocolate I eat and I have been trying a few different ones lately. These were my latest trial run and it was perhaps one I will not be trying again. They were not exactly bad in taste but they had very few redeeming features.

                Don't get me wrong I like special K and I love chocolate but I have to ask what was the point in these bars? All they seemed to be was a small bowl of special K clumped together with some chocolate chips mixed in. The reason why they are only about 90 calories per bar is that the bar is so small and mainly thin air. Think rather badly made chocolate corn flake cakes and you would not be far wrong.

                Anyway, the bars are incredibly dry and very crunchy, you will need a bottle of water or a glass of milk with these. The flakes also were quite rough which made them not the easiest things to eat. Whilst they still have the special K taste that I love I was expecting something a bit different and better with these as I can make a bowl of cereal with chocolate chips at home (I often do by the way). I suppose the advantage is that it is more convenient to carry one of these around than a bowl and a box of cereal.

                For me the taste of these bars is perhaps a little too sweet and the chocolate chips are of a low quality chocolate which considering the price was a disappointment (a box of 6 was just under £2). Whilst Kellogg's have not exactly been mean with the number of chocolate chips I think these would have been better with fewer in number but a better quality of chocolate. The chips used tasted slightly reminiscent of the chocolate you use to coat a cake with. There was a fairly strong malty taste from the special K flakes but there was also a slight oiliness which sort of put me off them.

                So what is the damage on the old waistline?

                Nutritional info per 21g bar

                Energy - 84 kcal
                protein - 2g
                carbs - 16g (sugar 7g)
                fat - 1.5g (saturates 0.8g)
                Fibre - 0.3g
                Salt - 0.1g

                Well the odd one will not ruin your diet but considering there is virtually nothing to these bars it is quite high in calories for what it is. These are not a cereal bar I will be buying again as I prefer them to be somewhat more substantial and filling.

                  Doubt I would bother with these again

                  I have been following the Slim Fast regime for nearly 4 weeks now and due to the cost of the Slim Fast snacks I have been looking for alternatives. I came across these Special K Chocolate Chip bars on ofer at Tesco; two boxes, each containing 6 bars, for £3.00, which made the bars 25p each, which is much cheaper than the Slim Fast snacks.

                  The bars contain 90 calories and 1.5g of fat each, which is excellent and in some cases fewer calories than the Slim Fast snacks.

                  The bars are basically Special K cereal bound together with sticky stuff and chocolate chips. They do taste okay but not particularly amazing for me. They seem to break easily and snap, whereas I would prefer a chewier consistency. The chocolate chips are okay, not the nest quality in my opinion.

                  On the whole I could take or leave these bars, I much prefer rice krispies squares and those sorts of bars, but they are great value if you like them!!

                  Advantages

                  Disadvantages

                  Would definitely recommend

                  I must admit I'm not a huge fan of cereal bars but lately I've been in a bid to eat a bit healthier and vowed to eat breakfast even if it is just a cereal bar. I have seen adverts on TV for a while now advertising special k cereal and the 14 day plan they have to kick start weight loss. I have tried the cereal and found it to be ok, so I decided to try the bars. At the time of purchasing, these bars were on special at the co-op for 1.50. I decided to try the chocolate chip ones.

                  The cereal bars come in a white cardboard box which is fairly plain displaying the special k logo. The box has a front opening panel that makes them very easy to open. You can find 6 bars per pack.

                  Each cereal bar is 21g and it is a decent size to put hunger over till lunch. The bars them self's are fairly chewy with crunchy chocolate chips. There is nowhere near as much chocolate in the bar as it shows on the front but there is still enough to taste. I actually find these bars to be delicious. They don't taste like the cereal but they have a nice sweet taste. You can easily snack on these instead of a chocolate bar for added health benefits.

                  Each cereal bar contains only 90 calories and 0.8g of saturated fat. If you do the weight watchers plan then you will be happy to know that these bars equal just 1 and a half points. I tend to carry a few around through the day to beat any sweet temptations. They are also good for later snacks too.
                  Other varieties available are:

                  Original
                  Apple and pear
                  Peach and apricot
                  Fruits of the forest

                  I would definitely recommend these bars. They are extremely tasty and do fill you up quite well when you are feeling a bit peckish.

                  Like a mentioned earlier, I got these on special. I think paying full price is about 2.19 per pack, this is quite steep compared to some much cheaper brands however, it is worth paying the bit extra for the taste.

                    Advantages

                    Disadvantages

                    Not as nice as the fruit varieties

                    I quite often keep cereal bars in my handbag so that if I want to snack on something during the day I have something suitably low in fat to hand to prevent temptation. I am doing the weight watchers plan and the Kellogs Special K bars are a range I rely on quite a lot as each bar is only 1.5 points so ideal as a snack.

                    These bars are quite expensive in my opinion, a box of 6 usually retails for around £2, but at the moment in Asda you can get two boxes for £3 which is a bit better. It does annoy me that stores own varieties are so much less, how can Kellogs justify being so much more? Having tried other varieties though I personally think that the Special K range are by far the tastiest so I guess I have just answered my own question!

                    I usually buy the original and the apple and pear varieties of this product but as I was buying on a special offer I decided to try the chocolate chip version this time. I duly chucked one individually wrapped bar in my handbag this morning and succombed to an 11 o'clock hunger pang, so it got put to the test!

                    The most striking thing about the chocolate chip variety is, in my opinion, that it is incredibly dry! The fruit ones are always moist and chewy but this one is brittle and crunchy and bereft of any element of moistness. It does taste chocolatey and there is certainly no skimping on the chocolate chips which are liberally scattered throughout the bar.

                    The bar tastes more of oats than the other varieties but again I think this is purely because it is so dry. The bar is identical to the fruit ones other than having chocolate chips instead of clumps of berries and fruit, I can only think that the moistness of those other bars comes straight from the fruit and that is whats missing here.

                    I wouldn't say this version is unpleasent to eat, it filled me up as much as the other bars do and I did feel like I had had a bit of a chocolate fix. But its not a joy to eat like the fruit ones are and you do need to eat it with a drink to hand.

                    I am not sure I will buy these again to be honest. I have tried chocolate style bars from other ranges which do the job better for roughly the same points value (the Chewee range comes to mind) and I know how much I enjoy the fruit varities of this range. I think Special K should stick to what they do best!
