At work it is a customary tradition that when it is your birthday you are to bring cakes in - enough for everyone! Last birthday as the day was fast approaching I realised that I simply didn't have the time to spend baking a cake from scratch, so I nipped into Tesco to see what their cake range was like. Being a chocoholic I am always drawn to the gooey chocolate ones, and I soon spotted this Party Chocolate Tray Cake. In comparison to the other cakes they had it was extremely good value, priced at only £4.50. The cake is big enough for 15 portions, which was more than adequate to feed the office! The cake is packaged in a beautiful purple box with a clear window on the front so that you can see the rectangular shaped cake inside. The cake itself could in all honesty be used for all types of celebration, as it is not iced with any words or images to indicate birthdays. This is a chocolate sponge cake with a thick chocolate icing on the top, which is covered with lots of white, milk, and dark chocolate curls, as well as small chocolate biscuit balls that are very similar to maltesers. The sponge was of a good depth too, around 3 to 4 cm at a guess. What is it like? The sponge was really moist, light and airy, not being too heavy. The icing was really quite a reasonable thick layer across the top of the sponge. It was deliciously chocolately with a really sweet taste. The cake left a really nice after taste for little while after eating too. As a confirmed chocoholic I could have easily just eaten the icing and not bothered with the sponge! The icing wasn't too sickly either, as often chocolate cakes can be. The amount of icing to the amount of sponge cake was just about right to achieve the perfect balance! This cake I'm sure would also be quite nice slightly warmed and served with some cream as it quite like a dessert. You can obviously also eat it straight form the box as it is! Nutritional values per portion: 210 kcals 17g sugar 11g fat 3g saturated fat 0.3g salt As you can see it is not overly great for you, but as a birthday treat it is perfect! For the money and the taste you really cannot better this cake. Since my birthday, this cake has become a popular favourite with the office with it appearing at most birthdays!
For my Mums birthday I assumed my Step-Dad would buy her a birthday cake. I assumed wrongly of course and I had actually been away helping my mate move house and was back on her actual birthday and when I found out he hadn't bothered getting her a cake (she always does for us) me and my mate raced to Tesco on the way back. When I got into Tesco I was limited on choice and in money! I had spent an absolute fortune as it was and was on a serious limited budget! I spotted this costing £4.48 and decided to get it. Sure it wasn't a conventional looking birthday cake but it was large and chocolate and I knew already we had candles and stuff at home to decorate it with when I got back! The Packaging: Large purple coloured box with a clear 'window' to the front of it. On the front of the box I'm told it is Tesco Chocolate Party Traybake 'Moist chocolate sponge, covered in chocolate buttercream. Hand finished with milk chocolate covered malt balls and milk and white chocolate decorations' and then I'm told it contains no artificial flavours or colours, that it's suitable for Vegetarians, serves 15 people, there is an at a glance nutritional chart on there and the best before date is clearly displayed. Other information on the box includes a full nutritional rundown chart being given, ingredients and allergy advice is given along with storage advice and of course contact details for Tesco are listed as usual. The cake comes in a large but robust squarish, oblong tray and looks really nice indeed! I was so impressed with the size which attracted my attention to it in the first place lol! So I got my cake home and pulled it out of the tray which was so easy to do even though it's really big because it has a piece of cardboard you gently pull to get the cake out and it came out with complete ease and of course I simply decorated mine and put it on a large plate! The cake simply looked amazing! Chocolaty looking and moist and the top of it was coated with milk and white chocolate curls and flakes of white chocolate along with little maltezer like balls in abundance. Taste wise this cake was amazing too! Not only did it look moist and smell naturally of chocolate it tasted sweet and chocolaty too! The sponge was light and fluffy and not too sweet but really moist and airy then there is a layer of chocolate cream which was rich and creamy and of course the decoration of chocolate I have mentioned already adorned the top beautifully! This cake stored well for 4 days after opening it up (I shoved it in a large airtight container) and it really did give 15 rather generous portions. It tastes marvelous and not at all too much considering there was so much chocolate flavourings going on in there. It simply is a rich chocolate cake! Delicious and I think this is brilliant either as a treat for the family, in which case it offers great value for money or like I did......decorate it up and make it look special for an occasion. My Mum loved this cake and I was really proud of it's appearance and quality! Great buy I'm well chuffed! Allergy Advice: Contains: Milk, wheat, gluten, Egg, soya. Recipe: No nuts.
