Advantages: It has nice fresh tasting marzipan and lovely smooth chocolate

Disadvantages: It has a lot of calories and fat

I was in Thorntons looking at the Easter eggs yesterday and I noticed a display of chocolate bars on the counter. Me and my daughter both like marzipan very much but I never see marzipan chocolate bars any more except for those Ritter ones which do not taste of proper marzipan to me. I brought a few Almond Marzipan Bars for me and some to give to my daughter to enjoy.

I think it is quite a small chocolate bar but it is packaged to look bigger because the paper is very loose on it which makes it look like I was buying a bigger bar. I was happy to see the chocolate coating on the marzipan bar is dark Thorntons chocolate because dark chocolate is my favourite and I think it goes better with marzipan than milk chocolate. The chocolate is quite thin except at the 2 ends where it is thicker. The chocolate tastes good quality and I can tell it is proper Thorntons chocolate and not a cheaper one made in an inferior quality to fob off on the chocolate bars. It is very rich and has a lovely chocolate flavour that is typical of Thorntons chocolate. I like the way it melts onto the marzipan when I put the chocolate into my mouth and it is easy to break a little piece of the chocolate off the bar so I can taste it without the marzipan.

The marzipan part of the chocolate bar is very sweet as all good marzipan should be. It has a lovely fluffy texture that melts slowly in my mouth. It tastes of proper marzipan and not the cheap slab of artificial marzipan that Ritter use in their bars. It tastes to me like home made marzipan even though it probably is produced by the vat full to make all these chocolate bars. I can definatly taste the almonds used in the marzipan and it is very smooth.Together the chocolate and marzipan are perfect because the sweetness of the marzipan is toned down a little bit by the slight bitterness of the smooth dark chocolate and the 2 different tastes are lovely together.

Every 45g bar has 198 calories in it and over 7 g of fat so for the size of the bar I think there must be a lot of sugar and fat in it. I do not mind this though because marzipan cannot be made in a light version because it has lots of nuts, sugar and eggs in it when you make it at home and they could not make it without using these high calorie ingrediants. It costs about 60 for every bar from Thorntons and I think some of the big supermarkets also sell a small range of these bars.

Summary: The best tasting marzipan bar I've had in a long time
