Thorntons Caramel Squares
Advantages: The Thorntons shortcakes taste lovely and sweet, they are a luxury and a treat
Disadvantages: You cannot buy them in many places and some people might find them too sweet
I wrote a review about the worst shortbread (McVities) so today I went out and brought a packet of the best so I could tell you about this one. I do a bit of my shopping in the Co Op each week and my favourite thing in the whole shop are these Thorntons Caramel Shortcake Squares.
I have eaten a lot of shortbread/shortcake in my 61 years but have never tasted better than this. The shortcake squares are laid out in a gold plastic tray and this feels nicer than just taking one out of a packet.
Thorntons have made the squares with a layer of biscuit, a layer of caramel and a thin chocolate topping. They are very generous with the shortcake and caramel and I like that the squares have a lot of caramel because a lot of biscuits that contain caramel are very stingy with it. Here the caramel and bisuit has an equal split and that makes these seem all the more luxurious.
Because the squares are so well made it is easy to separate the components of the biscuit so I can tell you a little bit about each layer. The chocolate is a nice quality Thorntons milk chocolate and is nice and creamy. The caramel underneath is the best part of the biscuit for me. It has a delicious buttery toffee taste and is lovely and sweet. It has the texture of fudge mixture that has not quite set. I like to scrape the layer of caramel off with my teeth and eat it on its own.
The shortcake layer tastes more like the base of a lemon meringue pie to me. It definitely does taste of butter and digestives and I think it is lovely and sweet. It has a nice crumbly texture and melts in my mouth when I eat it on its own.
Eating a square without taking it to bits is equally lovely but I like mine to last as long as possible. When I bite into a whole square I like the way the chocolate and biscuit layers sink into the separating caramel layer and make the caramel squidge out of the sides.
It is very sweet and I think that is why the squares are so small. I can only eat 2 or 3 of these in one go even though I have a very sweet tooth. The shortcake and caramel are both very sugary and when eaten together it is very sweet indeed. They keep very well in my biscuit tin but the caramel gets a little bit tougher as they get older but they are still lovely.
There are nearly 100 calories in each small square and over 5g of fat so I am glad I do not eat many of these lovely little biscuits, I share a pack with my grandaughters and the shortcakes are very good quality so I have served them as buffet food before and everyone seems to like them. The only place I have seen them sold is the Co Op but I should think Thorntons shops would stock them as well especially the bigger shops. They cost £1. 59 and I think that is very good value for such a luxurious treat.
Summary: I bet you you cannot eat the whole pack at one time
