A lovely treat but eat sparingly!

Chocolate covered raisins are a lovely treat and they're one of my favourite little nibbles. I grabbed a pack of these from Thorntons and you can buy them from the high street stores or online at www.thorntons.co.uk. It costs £1.99 for a 190g packet.

Product description... Milk chocolates with raisin centres. Plump, juicy raisins generously smothered in Thorntons milk chocolate - a tasty little treat!

The packaging has changed recently and had a nice makeover to make it look a bit more modern. They come in a plastic pouch with a shiny silver background and a bold image of the chocolates on the front. The size of the bag has also increased from 140g to 190g so you are getting a more generous amount. The bag has an easy tear open tab at the top which is simple to use and keeps the opening even rather than splitting the whole bag open like the old packaging used to!

This bag full of raisins has been smothered in chocolate! Delicious milk chocolate in fact. The chocolate coating is quite rich for a milk chocolate flavour and has a nice sweet taste to it. The chocolate is beautifully smooth and has that lovely melt in your mouth effect. The raisins inside are nice and juicy and have a good contrasting texture as they are a bit chewy which goes nicely with the melty milk chocolate.

Chocolate raisins are perfect little nibbles and nice to snack on. These are my favourite choice of sweets to take to the cinema as they don't make any loud crunching noises! They're also great for lunchbox snacks, party nibbles, or mixing in with ice cream sundaes - yum :) You get a lot in a 190g bag, but they aren't hugely filling and it is tempting to just keep putting your hand in the bag for more...read on the next section for a good reason to show a little self restraint!

I do have a keen sweet tooth and love anything that's coated in chocolate, but reading the nutritional values made me feel incredibly guilty! Per 100g (that's roughly half the packet) there is a massive 61.2g of sugar and 10g of saturated fat. This is huge on both counts and for something that only constitutes a small snack you are taking in a lot of extra fat and sugar on top of the actual meals you will be eating throughout the day. This is also high in calories and best avoided if you're watching your weight.

I think these make a great treat and you can definitely taste the quality. The chocolate is lovely and smooth and the raisins are juicy with a nice texture to them. These Thorntons Chocolate Smothered Raisins are superior to the more generic brands you can get, and are well worth buying. Just watch out for the sugar and saturated fat - eek!
