Advantages: They are delicious
Disadvantages: They are very sweet!
I was lucky enough to receive a box of Thorntons Dessert Gallery chocolates as a gift. And what a lovely gift it was too! The packaging itself is quite plain and simple in design. The box is predominantly white and there is a little transparent window in the lid that allowed me to take a cheeky little peek at a few of the gorgeous looking chocolate dessert treats inside that were tantalizing my taste buds.
On opening the box, it was quite difficult to choose what to taste first! They all looked so delicious! The 215g box contains 8 different flavours to choose from, all of which there are 2 of, therefore making a total of 16 chocolates. Also inside the box is a handy little menu that you can look through with a short description of each chocolate. I really liked the little menu. I never understand why some chocolate selection boxes have the flavours all printed of the bottom of the box where you can't see them properly without having to twist your head in a funny angle, or else spill your chocolates all over the place. A little menu is a much better idea. However, even without the menu I could guess what most of them were anyway as they did look like a miniature version of the dessert they were inspired by, which includes Creme Brulee, Lemon meringue, Tiramisu and Summer fruit pudding.
This little box really has quite a mixture of everything. It contains an assortment of milk, white and dark chocolates, a lovely combination of flavours and a variety of textures. My favourite was definitely the lemon meringue. The solid white chocolate cup contained a soft light creamy lemony tasting center, and tiny little crunchy sweet meringue pieces on top. Lots of lovely textures and complimentary flavours all in one tiny tasty chocolate.
As always there has to be one in the box that isn't quite as nice as the others. There was a boozy tasting one that I wasn't keen on at all! The others were all absolutely delicious though, and more than made up for the slightly naff one. In fact I may have been tempted to devour the entire contents all at once (minus the boozy one) if it wasn't for the fact that these chocolates are VERY sweet. More than 2 or 3 chocolates at a time would have left me feeling quite bilious.
I really think these bite sized dessert treats are a fabulous idea and work really well. I'm greedy for more, and I have seen that Thorntons also have a Winter Desserts box that includes black forest gateau flavour, and a Great British puddings box which includes Bakewell tart and Jam Roly Poly! I haven't had the pleasure of tasting either of those yet, but if this Dessert box is anything to go by, they're sure to taste wonderful.
The Dessert Gallery make a lovely gift for someone special. I recently bought some for my Mum for Mothers Day as I loved my box so much. I enjoyed mine with a glass of wine one evening, and picked at the rest when I fancied, but my mum is much more posh and sophisticated and enjoys hers with coffee after dinner.
Summary: A posh chocolate selection box, inspired by classic desserts and made by Thorntons.
