      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      Nice for an occasional treat

Thorntons Ginger bar is a 38g bar, but is actually more like one long luxury soft centre chocolate. It is described on the wrapper as follows:
'Chocolate truffle centre with natural ginger oil and crystallised ginger pieces, enrobed in rich dark chocolate.'

      ~CONTENTS~
      It contains the following ingredients:
      Sugar
      Cocoa mass
      Butter
      Vegetable oil
      Fat reduced cocoa powder
      Glucose syrup
      Cocoa butter
      Humectant (sorbitol)
      Cocoa powder
      Crystallised ginger (1.5%)
      Emulsifier (soya lecithin)
      Salt
      Natural ginger oil
      Invertase

It also states on the wrapper that it is suitable for vegetarians, gluten free, alcohol free, and has no hydrogenated fat. It contains 180 kcal; 20.1g carbohydrate, of which sugars 18.4g; and 10.6g fat, of which saturates 7.4g.

      ~TASTING~
The outside of the bar is a coating of dark, slightly bitter chocolate. When bitten into, it gives way to a dark truffle centre, which has a sweeter flavour, although not excessively sweet. This contrasting flavour takes away some of the bitterness of the coating.

The middle is softer and more creamy textured than the outside, as you would expect from a truffle centre. There is also a noticeable, warm ginger flavour, and I detected a few tiny pieces of crunchy crystallised ginger embedded in the truffle centre. It's not an overwhelming ginger flavour though.

I find some ginger chocolates have too much ginger and it overpowers the chocolate, but this one doesn't. It's a nice balance of contrasting soft and crunchy textures, and sweet and bitter flavours.

      ~CONCLUSION~
This is a bar that's easily gone in four or five bites, and it's best to eat it slowly and savour it. It's quite intense in flavour, so one of these bars is enough. More than that would be sickly I think.

I'm glad to see it's got no hydrogenated fat but there's still quite a lot of saturated fat for my liking, so this is not something I eat very often. Overall it's nice for the occasional treat. It needs keeping somewhere fairly cool though. I left one of these in a warm room with a couple of other Thorntons bars one sunny day and they all went really squashy. It totally ruined the texture and flavour of all of them.

These sell at 68p per bar. However, I've noticed that the Thorntons website is currently offering 25% off everything if you enter the offer code XBN5 at the checkout page. Some lines are also available at 3 for 2.
