Thorntons Special Toffee
Advantages: Great taste, Excellent Price, Quality brand and product to match
Disadvantages: You'll want more . . .
Thorntons is a perfect example of a small business that has expanded and "made it in the big time." The first of the Thorntons shops was set up on a humble side street in Sheffield by a man named Joseph Thornton who at the time (1911) could not possibly have imagined the legacy that his small confectionary store would create for him. The business has remained in the Thornton family and it is only recently that the first non-family CEO was appointed. But over the course of the last century that family has been responsible for turning one small confectionary store into a multi-national, recognised brand that is known for premium quality products.
I have referred to Thorntons in an international sense but in actual fact, despite their huge success in the British market (becoming the U.K's leading manufacturer and retailer of chocolate) their forages into the European and U.S. markets have thus far proved to be relatively unsuccessful with nowhere near the turnover seen in the U.K. for their stores in the U.S, France and Belgium to name a few (perhaps they shouldn't take on the Belgians at their own game though!).
The Thorntons Product Range:
Thorntons are renowned for their range of specialist chocolates with everything covered from personalised gifts for every occasion to small individual chocolates to tempt those peckish passers-by (not that I would know anything about that....).
The majority of Thorntons sales are chocolate related with their boxes of chocolates being the most purchased product. This is to be expected but it is not so much of a formality as I had previously expected. Toffee (be it their "continental" or their "special" range) actually makes up about £80 million of the £180 million total turnover of Thorntons.
In the Special Toffee range there are 9 different flavours available. These are the flavours that are available to be enjoyed:
Brazil Nut Toffee
Fruit and Nut Toffee
Strawberry and Cream Toffee
I have tried most of these flavours at least one due to my slight obsession with different types of toffee. I haven't tried either of the nut ones and I have certainly never been tempted by the liquorice flavour. Now, I have to confess at this point that, as delicious as the Special Toffee flavour is, it is not my personal favourite. Chocolate Toffee will always hold that honour! Although, in general terms I think that Vanilla Toffee has to be the best I have ever tasted and I am surprised that I have never seen this flavour on the Thorntons shelves!
My experience of Thorntons Special Toffee:
First of all, the packaging, this is the first thing you notice upon picking the bag up for the first time. Most notable is the fact that, unlike so many of Thorntons products, the Special Toffee are presented in a bag rather than a box. The bag may be simply to change the emphasis of the sale to personal use rather than presenting the toffee in a format suitable to allow their giving as a gift. This also allows the cost of the product to be kept to a minimum with less extravagant packaging. The quality of the bag is good; it is by no means a cheap, flimsy feeling pack but still must be cheaper than a box.
The second thing to be noticed when I am buying something that I know I probably shouldn't is the price and for a toffee of this quality I am pleased to say that they are very reasonably priced. I buy the 125g bags from my local Thorntons but I know they are available in other sizes dependant on where you purchase the bag from (Thorntons products are sold in supermarkets nationwide and the products are also available from approximately 180 franchises too). The price that I am used to paying is just 99p which in comparison to other types of toffee (even the bottom of the range stuff at our local sweet shop is £1.50 per 100g!) is very good for 125g.
Thorntons Special Toffee includes the following ingredients in order of highest to lowest % composition of the product (I have included my own input on the notable ingredients):
Sugar - I don't think that it will come as a surprise to anyone that the main ingredient of toffee is just.. sugar.. and this is what makes a) that beautiful taste and b) the product hideously bad for your weight, health and teeth!
Glucose Syrup - Used to soften texture and enhance the sweet flavour
Butter - Dairy products aren't good news for those of us wishing to enjoy the taste but skimp on the calories..
Whole Milk - More dairy products!
Humectant (sorbitol) - Also known as "E" number E420 which is essentially a sweetener.
Partially Inverted Sugar Syrup - Another sweet syrupy ingredient.
Salt - Just to throw in another bad ingredient?!
Flavouring - Doesn't look great and it doesn't say which flavourings are included but then again it is reassuring that it is the ingredient which makes up the least of the finished toffee.
To back up the points made above in the ingredients section, the dietary information on the pack states that per 100g of toffee there are 510kcal and 21.4g of saturated fat which just goes to show how bad these are for people who have to be careful with what they eat. Especially bearing in mind that the reccommended daily intake of calories is 1940 calories per day for women and 2550 for men (according to UK Department of Health Estimated Average Requirements).
To bring all of this information together, this is a product which tastes absolutely fantastic but of course, like all toffee products, has to be eaten in moderation due to the nature of the ingredients listed above! Personally I love the product and would wholly recommend that anyone who likes toffee should try this one - the other flavours are superb too. The taste is sweet but not quite sickly, rich and creamy but not sticky and messy and best of all is the smooth, melt in your mouth texture! Go on give them a go.. just once!!
