Chocolate Heaven Since 1911
Every birthday, Christmas, celebration and sometimes Saturday (just because it was a Saturday) my dad would have a box of Thorntons special toffee. If fact according to the Thornton's website the toffee is , "Deliciously rich and creamy, yet simple, just the kind of gift to be enjoyed by all ages whatever the occasion!"
Thorntons is a chocolate company established by Joseph William Thornton in 1911 in Britain. The year of establishment has been used in one of their famous marketing campaigns, "Chocolate heaven since 1911." According to an article I read Thorntons now has nearly 400 shops and cafes and a turnover over £180m.
Apparently, special toffee is often cited as one of their favourite products and with their Continental range of chocolates accounts for almost £80 million of Thornton's sales. It's easy to see why as in my opinion it is a great quality product with an even better taste.
The name toffee apparently comes from the Creole word for a mixture of sugar and molasses. This is basically what toffee is, a confection made by boiling molasses or sugar (creating inverted sugar) along with butter. Thornton's special toffee is said to be still created using traditional methods made of a special recipe with the finest brown sugar, golden syrup and rich creamy butter carefully blended and slow cooked in copper pans. I have always found the toffee to be lovely and delicious. It has a lovely golden colour to it and each piece really looks inviting. It is quite hard toffee but once you get it in your mouth and chew it a bit it starts to get very chewy and is very juicy. It has such a rich, sweet taste to it as well but the nice thing is it's not a sickly taste.
What I also like is that each piece has a different shape and size to it. They have obviously made it in a big tray and then probably taken a hammer to it and just smashed it so you end up with some very small pieces and also some really big chunks. This, in my opinion makes it really fun to eat as sometimes all you want is a little piece and sometimes you want a really big piece. The fact that they are not uniform in the box is great. It also makes it a bit easier to eat because sometimes the really really big pieces take ages to bite down in your mouth.
The other great thing about the toffee is that you can buy it in a number of different amounts. They do little bags of toffee if you are just looking for a quick snack. They either have 125g bags or 250g bags which are not too expensive. The 125g bags are £1.15 and the 250g bags are £2.25. They also sell the toffee in boxes which come in either 550g or 650g for £5.50 each.
I would have to say that the original is probably the best but the toffee also comes in so many different flavours so there is really something for everyone. Flavours include, brazil nut, chocolate covered toffee, banana toffee and mint toffee. Pick up a bag for yourself today!
