Thornton's Special Toffee

The product l am about to review is the same as the item listed, however the size is the much bigger boxed 650g version.

Thornton's

For a little brief information about Thornton's, the creators of my toffee, it may be useful to know that they have many, many, many, years of experience with making special toffee. The British company have been making special toffee for over 80 years now and the recipe they use is still much the same as first created in 1925 by Stanley Thornton (son of the creator Joseph William Thornton).
Apparently there secret to delicious toffee is the fine quality ingredients and how and when they add the ingredients to the toffee as it cooks.

Thornton's are also a chocolatier, selling a whole host of delicious chocolates. There first shop was in Sheffield in 1911. Even today they continue to create fine quality chocolates and have continued success.

As a high street shop, they appeal to a great deal of people, and now sell a huge range of confectionary and gifts that appeal to a wide range of consumers. Thornton's has become a household name.

Special toffee

This delicious toffee is made under strict guidelines in copper pans, made with delicious brown sugar, creamy butter and golden syrup.

On initial taste, you notice that this toffee is very rich. You can immediately taste both the creamy butter and golden syrup. The product is extremely sweet, and you only need a few small pieces to satisfy a sweet tooth.
The toffee (unless kept refrigerated) is soft, so its not toffee that will break the teeth.
The taste is delicious and after only one piece you will no doubt find you want more.

I am not actually a huge toffee lover. In fact this box was brought for me, for my graduation day. I probably wouldn't have brought this myself. But having tasted it, l have changed my mind, and think it was an excellent gift. It really is a high quality product, which for me is a cut above all other toffee bought and tasted.

Some may find the richness and the sweetness too much for a delicate mouth. But l suppose toffee is quite sickly. For me this doesn't spoil it at all, it just means you wouldn't want to eat the whole box in one sitting, if you did you would no doubt feel very, very ill.

We opened this box last night. I'm not sure my partner had ever eaten Thornton's toffee before, and so his eyes lit up after his first taste. I had forgotten just how tasty Thornton's toffee is. The flavour reminds me of the delicate flavour of Worthy's originals, but the toffee is chewy and softer. Not too soft, but not unbearably crunchy either. The texture is perfect, and the appearance is light brown chunks. l expect this is the result of the brown sugar and golden syrup.

The only thing that slightly annoyed me a little bit with this product is that it tends to come in a big mangled blob of sticky toffee that's all stuck together. This means it can be quite difficult to pull out a bit of toffee to eat. However it really is a small price to pay. I am told on the back of the box that the reason it clumps together is because they use no emulsifiers or stabilisers.

Unfortunately as with any Toffee bought, you can expect them to be calorific! With every 25g there are 128 calories and 7.4g fat, and remember the box contains 650g.
The product is suitable for vegetarians, and is free from gluten, but unfortunately they cannot guarantee it is completely nut free. So its probably best to exercise caution if you have a nut allergy.

This product is priced around £5.50

Final note

So Special toffee is full of calories and fat, they come in a huge blob of toffee, which weighs rather heavy.... But they taste really good. I'm wondering why l don't buy toffee instead of chocolates more often. As it seems a really good gift, and its something different. I suppose you cant go wrong with chocolates, but l was delighted with my toffee. Thornton's toffee is a delicious treat, and they also do a range of other toffee, such as chocolate toffee, brazil nut, treacle, mint, banana and liquorice.
I will definitely be buying this product in the future.
