Advantages: Trance heaven, smoke machine
Disadvantages: lack of seating
Amnesia, you'll never remember going here! Sorry, I just had to get those terrible jokes out of my system, now that's over and done with I'll get on with telling you about one of the White Isle' major clubs, Amnesia. Built in the 1970's it was the first open air club, though sadly they've had to cover it up now, but it's still rather stylish. Situated in San Rafael, on the major highway from San Antonio to Ibiza Town, just opposite Privilege it's not the easiest club to get to on the island, I'd recommend the disco bus that runs across the island throughout the night, for a measly 250 pts (£1) you'll get a chauffeur driven ride to the door of the club in extravagant style. Or you may get crammed on a smelly, boiling hot bus and subjected to Spanish 'music' for half an hour before missing your stop and ending up on the wrong side of the island. But at least you don't have to shell out for a taxi and an authentic near death experience because of the Nigel Mansell wannabe who populate Ibiza's roads. Nevermind. If you do take this option then it'll set you back around 1,500 pts (£6), though you will appreciate how safe the British roads really are. Once you've got to the club, assuming that you do eventually, you're faced with a short walk to the entrance round the back. Once navigating the tricky terrain and the not so tricky bouncers you're into the club and the night has begun. Unless you went somewhere beforehand, then it's just carrying on, well, whatever, nevermind... That's enough Nirvana for you, this is a house club, none of your rock here, so lets get on with it. You enter the club into the main room and as with all the Ibizan clubs the size hits you straight away. The Jockey is situated high above the main dancefloor, which has plenty of podiums to strut away on, as Puff Daddy was observed doing earlier this year. At the back of the room is a long bar, rather pac
ked all night, but if you manage to push/assault your way through here you can get to one of two rather quieter bar areas, both with very limited seating. Around the top of the room is a balcony that houses the VIPs for the evening and looks out on the commoners below. The soundsystem in the main room is pumping to say the least, so don't expect many conversations, though that may disappoint you because you obviously go to a club to talk, mmm, yes. The lighting rig is also up to scratch but the highlight of the room are the smoke cannons which can fill the room with fog in 5 seconds, when the jokers operate them you'll know about it as the are so loud they block out the music, as well as filling the room with smoke you will fill your pants as well, especially if you're standing underneath one. Nightmare. The other room is known as the terrace and although it does have a fine array of plants/trees it does have a roof (though it didn't used to) and therefore should not be called the terrace. I think I might complain. This room is easily as big as many clubs in England and usually throws out the funky tunes. The volume is generally not as high as the main room due to the glass roof and the noise restrictions, but it's still going off, though the lighting rig is also a little lack lustre. The VIP balcony is extended into this room as well and stretches above the massive bar and few seats that this room possessed. The nights: (though they might change by next year) Monday:Cocoon. Sven Vath runs this techno orientated night with the likes of Carl Cox, Jeff Mills and Richie Hawtin. For those who like it hard and funky. Tuesday:Gods Kitchen. The Midlands superclub take on Ibiza with their usual hard house/trance music policy. The Jocks include Fergie, John '00' Flemming and Ferry Corsten. Wednesday:La Troya. A flamboyant gay night loved by the locals and holiday makers alike. Thursday:Cream. Come d
own for some scouse house and trance. One of the first English promoters in Ibiza are still going strong. Their nights are blend trance with progressive and feature Paul Van Dyk, Seb Fontaine and John Digweed. Stomping. Friday:Dance Valley. The Dutch promotion team bring yet more trance to the club with a very international DJ line up. Saturday:Zenith. US house night with Sneak, Armand and Junior Sanchez to name but a few. Makes a change from the trance I suppose. Sunday:Espuma. Foam party with the foam often exceeding head height. Very large range of music here from trance through to pop. A proper party. Prices vary through the season but you should expect to pay 3,000 to 7,000 pts (£12 - £24) depending on the night, DJ and time in the season. Drinks are average with water being 1,000 pts (£4) and a beer 1,600 (£6.40), so take loads of money with you. Tickets can be bought in advance at numerous bars around the island and can often save a few quid. Beware when it's raining as the roof is not waterproof, so remember your brolly. It generally opens at 12 and closes at 7 though it does vary. As with all Ibiza clubs there is not a dress code but most people look quite clubby shirt/skirt etc.. And there are a few cyber kids though I'd rather not mention those individuals. Overall I would say that Amnesia is a must if you love your trance, it's a very stylish club and looks great, the crowd is quite European, not as much as Pacha but there definetly seemed to be lots of Italians there, most of whom seemed to be rather drunk, but nevermind. The only bad things being the rather the worse for wear crowd (or maybe I was gutted that I didn't feel like them) and the lack of seating. Oh, and the rain.

The Dutty Hooer - 04/11/01 Reading that brought back many a fond memory from the summer! Amnesia's been described here right down to a tee... but no mention of floating jellyfish? |
