“ Address: 608 Ann St / Fortitude Valley / Queensland / 4006 Australia „
Birdee Num Num is a bar-cum-club-cum-restaurant in the nightlife district of Fortitude Valley in Brisbane, Australia, named after a scene from the movie 'The Party'. We came across the bar on our stay in the hostel Bunk (see my other review on this). The bar is attached to the hostel but as well as providing entertainment for the guests of the hostel, it also allows entry to other members of the public.
There are two separate areas in Birdee Num Num each with a bar, one inside, and one outside but undercover. The outside area is decorated in a tropical theme with wooden partitions and doors and pretty lanterns hanging from the ceiling. There are a few long tables and some small high circular tables with bar stools were you can relax your feet or have something to eat and a pool table to play some games at. There is also a small VIP area, which can fit around 15 people in, consisting of a low round table with a comfy circular cushioned sofa surrounding it. This area isn't always closed off though as we were sitting in it for much of the night with some friends and we certainly weren't classed as VIP! Next to the VIP area is a separate room which is called the 'rooftop' as it is open-air and raised up slightly from the rest of the bar. Here, you can relax on the wooden decking or (fake) grass around a fountain. The hostel's heated pool and spa is actually located in the club and you can take a dip in it (with your drinks in plastic cups) whilst listening to the music. Obviously though you don't get many people in the pool at night, only the odd few who are more than likely going to be staying in the hostel.
The inside area hosts the larger of the two bars and is decorated in a more modern and stylish way with deep red and burgundy colours and bright red lights. There are flat circular platforms dotted around the large room that one or two people can jump up and have a dance on, as well as a large cushioned seat which looks like a luxurious bed - the perfect place to take a rest from too much dancing.
The outside area is the place to chill out with a drink or some food and have a chat with friends, and the inside area is where the music is turned up loud for those who want to dance the night away. This is what makes it such a great place to spend the evening as there is the mixture of chilled out and party people and you can just switch between the two types whenever you fancy.
If you're peckish either a snack or a proper meal, Birdee Yum Yum offers both of these from bar snacks to salads to main meals. I became addicted to Australia's wedges bar snack (potato wedges served with sour cream and sweet chilli) and the portion I got in here for $7 was well worth it and so delicious too! Food is served well into the evening even when the nightclub is open so you'll never get hungry. If you're staying in the hostel, Birdee Yum Yum offer a free BBQ on certain days but you have to make sure you get there early as all the backpackers will be there straight away as soon as they hear the word 'free'! But there was plenty to go around and many people even went up for seconds.
The bar plays all types of music but mainly chart and dance, performed by some of Australia's hottest and best up-and-coming DJs. They often host fun and games earlier on in the evening to get you in the mood for a fun and exciting evening. Some of their more popular nights are Monday Mayhem, filled with all sorts of silliness and shenanigans; Wednesdays at Birdees, with party tunes from Brisbane's best DJs; and Num Num Sundays with special guest DJs.
My husband and I were in Australia for 9 weeks and this was the best bar/club we went to. Not only because of the chillax/party atmosphere, but because the people in there were so great. We met and chatted to some others who were staying in the hostel as well as some locals who regularly visited the bar. They told us that it was the best place to spend the evening in Brisbane and we didn't doubt that. Because of the relaxed atmosphere, there was a more calm and friendly feel to the place. Saying that though, there was one fight between 2 girls who both wanted to get up on the stall to dance but this was broken up straight away by the excellent yet friendly security guards with no damage caused. It does get pretty packed in there though because it's so popular but, with the outside area, you can easily just walk a few steps to get some cool air and rest for a while.
I can't remember exactly how much, but drinks were a little pricey for backpacker's budgets. However, I was drinking cocktails for most of the evening so it can't have been too expensive as I'm sure I wouldn't have spent too much on drinks. However, this isn't the sort of place you go to get completely plastered - there are other more hardcore nightclubs in Brisbane for that! It's a laid back but extremely fun place so it shouldn't make too much of a dent in your wallet/purse.
