Advantages: I had there the best parties of my life.
Disadvantages: whats wrong about that? :-)
Ten years ago, if you were asking someone about the top 3 of the techno clubs in Germany, the answer would mostly have been: the "Omen" in Frankfurt, the "Base in Dresden and the "Tresor" in Berlin. Nowadays the "Ostgut" would anyway be in this top 3 (at least through the fact that the Base died the hero-death of a underground club). Beside the "Tresor" it is THE club in Berlin if you are looking for a good night to dance through. The Ostgut was a old store for the nearby railway-station (Ostbahnhof). It has two levels. The ground level with a huge dancefloor and the upstairs level with chilling areas and the Panorama Bar as second dancefloor. The name Panorama Bar is well choosen, you have a great view over the industrial zone of Berlin *smile* (if the sun is shining) and can dance in the same time. On the ground level you have a nice dark dirty industrial hall, as we like it. The sound system is the best you can expect (and its LOUD!) and also the ligth-effects are very up-to-date. Over the years the Ostgut became very famous and so right now many famous DJs are playing here. But thats not what the parties in the Ostgut are about. They dont depend to much an a well known DJ for some reasons: A) are the local heros and the resident DJs of the Ostgut very good ones and B) depends the feeling and the vibes of a party more on the people on the dancefloor. That is it what makes a good DJ: To make the people scream. And thats what I call a "really good party": Dancing the whole night, screaming, celebrating, going beyond the borders of your physical resources and afterwards sitting in a train home at 4 pm, only hoping for you bed but with that very special smile on your face. And thats what I had every time I was in the Ostgut. For Berlin is not quite expensive to go there, its about 15 to 20 DM (7 to 10 Euro) what are right now 5 to 8 Pounds. And its worth every Penny. <
br> Ok, I stopped on the ground level. You have also some toilets there of course (where you inoficaly can get drinking water for free) and some bars of course (moderate prices). There is als something you should NOT use as a chill out if you are not 100 % sure to go in there: the Darkroom. And its used as darkrooms are used: couples or groups of persons (of wich sex ever) are doing very human things there. So be involved or stay outside. You might see this things happen as well on the dancefloor or on the toilett. Dont worry. Thats quite normal there. Dont missunderstand me: The Ostgut is not made for voyeurs. But exibitionism is something that the majority there is familar with. Its just about being as you are. No games, no roles to play, just yourself. That can include sex. Ok, as a general problem on techno clubs also in the Ostgut the consum of drugs is very high. There are no special controlls on the entrance or during the party. But be aware of the police around. And dont drive if you are on drugs. A) Its simply stupid and B) They WILL get you. Dresscode is not needed here, because the Ostgut is a good clubs and good clubs dont worry about what you wear or how you dress but about what you can add to the party. Begining is normaly at 24.00, but most people dont arive before 2 am. Parties officaly last till 10 am, I used to stay there untill 1 or 2 pm. That must seem very unusal to Britans but thats our way. The is a good saying in the german techno scene: Our nights are more colorfull than your days. So, if you want a really good party in Berlin, dont miss the Ostgut. Hardfacts: Ostgut music: house, techno, hardcore, gabba, d'n'b, discohouse, goa, trance prices: 15 to 20 DM (7 to 10 euro) reachable: trainstation Ostbahnhof, then 10 minutes by feet nightbus: N5 subway: U5 Warschauer Strasse dresscode: none address: Ostgut Mühlenstraße 26/30 Berlin/Friedrichshai

- 29/07/02 I rate Tresor and Casino as the best clubs, but Ostgut is good. The Kit Kat Club must be tried out by anyone visiting Berlin too, just for the experience!
Sadly, I hear Tresor may finally close it's doors forever at the end of this year. If this is true then a legendary club will go down :-( |
