Advantages: the best club in the world, the best DJs in the world, the best music in the world
Disadvantages: no cameras
Missbrowneyedgirl and missblueeyedflatmate were on a mission. It was close to completion... We had found the holiday, booked it, obtained our travellers cheques, boarded the plane and arrived in Ibiza. All that was left was to fulfil the high priority purpose of our visit... We had to do SPACE! Space is a club with a difference and a reputation. You see space brings a whole new meaning to the concept after 'after-club' as Space opens at 08:00 most mornings! It hosts a variety of carry on parties, including Manumission Carry On on Tuesday mornings and Ministry of Sound & Café Ole on Saturday mornings. However the object of our affections, and probably the most notorious event they hold, is the incredible 22 hour extravaganza that is 'We love... Sundays at Space'. Starting at 8am Sunday and continuing through the day and night to 6am Monday, this is one hell of a clubbing adventure! Established in 1988 by Pepe Rosello, Space soon became an institution for clubbers, followers of fashion on celebrities alike. Space was voted the 'Best Club in the World' at the 2001 DanceStar Awards and it certainly lives up to this claim. DanceStar said about space, "The legendary terrace parties have as much to do with the fantastic setting as the cream of talent who grace the decks. It's Tenaglia's favourite club on the island, which should tell you something about it's pedigree" (Thanks to www.dancestar.net) Resident Jon Ulysses simply says, "Space captures the sprit of Ibiza". In the case of this club the praise bestowed on it in thoroughly deserved! Believe the hype! The club itself, situated next to the water park in Playa d'en Bossa, is a pretty spectacular site, not least because you are queuing to get in at 7:30 in the morning, regardless of whether you have been to bed or not! The inside of the club isn't very spectacular but the famous terrace is
what makes Space. An outdoor terracotta tiled terrace, covered with some kind of industrial plastic sheeting which is thin enough to let the sunlight through, and let you see the low planes flying into Ibiza airport above your head! This is actually quite a site as the roar of the engines, only slightly louder than the music, causes a Mexican wave effect across the terrace as peoples heads upturn and follow the path of the jet! Also the gentle breeze on the roof causes in to ripple and twinkle in the morning sun, giving an effect like the waves of the sea over your head! this really has to be seen as I have done it no justice in my description! Possibly the most important thing about Space is the atmosphere, yet this would exist without the music and DJs that create it. The inner room tends to play a little harder whereas the terrace sticks to lighter, uplifting, funky and latino house. Missbrowneyedgirl and missblueeyedflatmate were there on Sunday 16th of September and were treated to David Morales and Satoshi Tomiee carrying on the Def Mix closing party well into the Breakfast Set on the Terrace. You can name any of the big DJ's and they have nearly all played Space - Carl Cox, Pete Tong, Darren Emerson, Danny Tenaglia, Sasha, Danny Rampling Roger Sanchez and the Masters At Work to name but a few. Plus there are the incredible residents - Steve Lawler, Jason Bye, Jose de Divina, Reche, David Moreno, DJ Java and Jonathan Ulysses. One thing to note is that although Ibzia, Music and Drugs seem to be jammed in some kind of love triangle, there drugs really aren't in your face at Space. Obviously it is clear that people are using drugs but it isn't excessive and no-one is trying to push drugs in the club. Not that we saw anyway! Tickest for Space cost between 5,000 and 8,000 pesetas (roughly £20-32). You can however purchase discounted tickets from outlets all over the isalnd. For example in we had paid on the
door we would have paid 8,000 pts whereas we purchased a 7,000 pts ticket which included a free drink which eefectively saved us around £10. It also bought us a wristband which allows you to leave theclub once. This may sound expensive but remember it is a 22 hour opening! This is nice for when you've had enough, as Bora Bora beach bar is only two minutes walk away and is a great spot to chill out, get some food and people watch! You can also pick up flyers which give some discount on the entrance price. Drinks in the club are around 1,000 pts (around £4) for soft drinks/beer and 1,500 pts (around £6) for other alcoholic drinks such as spirits and mixers. There are very few bad points to this club although the don't allow cameras inside unless you are press. I assume they don't want rows of clubbers on the wall in front of the decks flashing away in the DJs eyes! Getting to Space is fairly easy by taxi from all over the island. Do agree a price with the driver before your journey though! There are also buses running nearby throughout the day and the famous disco bus runs up until 6:30 in the morning. Beware though as this will leave you with a couple of hours to kill before the club opens. When you want to leave, there are a constant stream of taxis outside the club and the Bora Bora beach bar. This Sunday (30th September) is the notorious Space closing party so unless you can get there, goodbye Space! Until next year! For more information about the club visit www.space-ibiza.com.

- 02/10/01 Great op.
I missed out on Space (sob) as we arrived and left on the Sunday but I can't wait to go next year. We did go and have a look at it from the carpark though (yes, we're sad).
Oh, if the discobus has stopped then the normal service bus starts at 7 and runs every 15 minutes from Ibiza town. So no excuses. |
