Advantages: Brilliant atmosphere, great music, top DJ's
Disadvantages: None at all - even the drinks are cheap!
The club is sectioned into different 'rooms'; each with their own DJ box, dance floor, bar and seating area. All rooms are brilliant in their own right, although my absolute favourite was the appropriately named Top Bar which is at the very top of the building and looks out over the beach.
We visited on a Saturday night, the busiest night for any club, and the atmosphere in the whole club was fantastic. A strict-ish dress code of 'collar and shoes' gives the club a more upmarket feel than other Dorset clubs whose customers seem to live in tracksuits and trainers! Banus has a nice range of clubbers and caters for anyone between the ages of 18 and 49, that's the age range I'd put on the place.
The rooms each have a distinctive theme as far as the music and DJ acts go; The Top Bar (where I spent most of my evening) was a brilliant mix of R&B, Hip Hop, chart dance music with even a bit of reggae thrown in at the end of the night. This room was probably the most relaxed of all of them, passing through the other rooms I could hear some hardcore dance music as well as what can only be described (oddly) as punk!
The club was absolutely heaving by 10pm, with people heading for the dance floors as soon as they arrived - I was wearing high heels which felt like they were slowly cutting off the circulation to my toes so didn't end up doing much dancing! It gets packed, particularly in the bar area, but because it's such a lovely cheerful place I didn't seem to mind the crowds as much as I do when clubbing in Birmingham.
The DJ's are brilliant. Uber cool Judge Jules was there a couple of weeks before we came to Banus and I reckon he'd have been in his element in such plush surroundings. The DJ box in the Main Hall is amazing; complete with massive sound system and strobe lighting, the visiting DJ's must love playing here! Forgetting the 'star' DJ's, the House guys are excellent too. They really know their audience and are clever at judging the mood, adjusting the music as the night goes on to suit the atmosphere. I loved the way Chris and Bob in The Top Bar threw in a few 80's tracks which got the punters dancing straightaway - particularly the hen night girls' who always love to sing along to Cyndi Lauper...
The Kazzbar is also worth a mention, this room is open on weekday evenings and feels more like a classy pub than a nightclub. The music in here is predominantly chill out stuff; soul with a sprinkling of Enya seems to be the order of the day here and it's a lovely soothing place to sit and relaxed.
The décor inside Banus is trendily minimal. The areas where you can sit and chill with your drinks are classily decorated with lots of chrome and glass, while the dance floor is uncluttered and spacious. I found the entire place to be comfortable and pleasant to the eye. The bar area in The Top Bar is gorgeous, full of mirrors and glass it just looked stunning when the strobes hit it.
The thing which surprised me about Banus was how reasonable the drinks prices are compared to other clubs I've visited recently. Lagers and spirits were not much more expensive than prices in nearby pubs, with all the major brands (and more!) readily available in all rooms. The wine menu was as long as my arm, with prices ranging from £8 to upwards of £29 a bottle. I recognised some of the names on the bottles, but many of them were well out of my budget!
If you fancy a good, late night out in Weymouth then definitely try Banus - there really is something to suit everyone. To find the club simply walk along the beachside in the direction of the Old Harbour until you see the large neon sign heralding your arrival at Banus. It really is as easy as that.
