For the last 7 years, House of God has been thrashing every other club night in Birmingham hands down. Hardcore, but friendly, scary in a fluffy kind of way, techno has never sounded so good. Since settling at subway for the time being, HOG have had the chance to seriously get their act together on the DJ front (I dare you to sit down during a Surgeon set!). The venue is small, but there's loads of space to get away from it all, from the garden to the violently red room upstairs. The atmosphere, though has got to be the clincher. Everyone welcome, none of your usual hardcore moodiness, and a complete dedication to party ethics, and it's soooo cheap! what more could you ask for????? If techno's not really your thing, then try upstairs, the drum and bass room is usually excellent, it's where you should be if you like Duracell bunny bouncing and dark atmospheric beats. Bar closes at 2 though (boo) so make sure you get them all in in advance!.
Despite the huge queue full of overexcited beer boys - the sight that greeted me on entering Bubble Love was as good as expected, bright and colourful banners and excellent purpose built DJ box with a great view of the DJs and a great sound system blasting out the vibes. Neil Appeal probably only known to those in and around Leicester as always played a modest set of hard house, which started off the night nicely, next up was Lonsdale, I'm sorry the guy has a nice style but he's a shit DJ. His attempts at scratching and mixing just don't come off at all and the crap he plays really does your head in. I for one had to hide in the chill out room and toilet for about an hour until the delectable Lisa Lashes floated into the box. I'm a huge Lisa fan, and as usual she didn't let us down. Kicking choons played out with panache - and for a stonkin' 3hrs I was in heaven. The only let down for me were the constant procession of 'acts' that adorned the stage infront of the DJ box. They were pretentious over the top and unnecessary, detracting from the most important thing of the night the music. Do yourselves a favour Bubble Love, lose (or improve) Lonsdale and ditch the caberet, we were there for one thing - to dance!
