Advantages: Great venue, Drinks promotions, Good nights

Disadvantages: Usual music

Last night I took my first trip to one of Leed’s newest clubs, well I say newest but it’s been open for a year but up until now they haven’t had a night on that appealed to me, what with me being a hardcore clubber and everything. Anyway, Creation is situated just off Millennium square in Leeds city centre, it is in the site of the old Town and Country club and looks not dissimilar to a big barn from the outside. The club is open every day of the week from 12 noon to 2 or 3 in the morning. During the day only the bar part of it is open, which serves food as well as a large variety of drinks. I’m not too sure of the food prices but the drinks were quite cheap when I went, £1.80 for a pint of the amber nectar and £2.60 for a smirnoff nice, though I have been informed that the prices are hiked on a Friday and Saturday, as is the case in most of Leed’s clubs.

Every night has a different ‘theme’ though usually the music is the standard mix of ‘party’ classics and chart cheese, though as the club boasts three rooms there is a bit of room for the promoters to play about with the music styles available. The night that I attended was Retro, who seem to be taking over the whole world at the moment with new nights springing up all over the shop. In the main room they had club classics, a good mix of house from 1988-2000, they avoided the temptation of going too commercial and the crowd certainly seemed to be loving it. In the other two rooms they had r n b and cheese respectively. I’ve got to say that I enjoyed seeing the cheese relegated to the back room for once. Yay.

The club itself is massive, having once upon a time been the Coliseum building, opened by Prince Albert in 1885 don’t you know, and then changing into the Town and Country in 1992. As I mentioned earlier it has 3 rooms, two smaller ones downstairs and a massive one upstairs. Even the small rooms are larger than some nightclubs
I’ve been to and the capacity must run into the thousands. Each room has it’s own DJ booth, all located in prime spots overlooking the dancefloor and there’s at least 2 bars in each room. There seemed to be loads of staff at each bar and there wasn’t much of a queue anywhere, though it was quite quiet so I expect you may have to wait a while on busier nights, or maybe not, I just don’t know. There’s a lot of seating space, which is always nice, and they are fully equipped with loads of leather sofas, which are quite a task to get out of, they should have warning signs really. The dancefloors are situated in the centre of each room and are of a decent size, there’s also a few podiums for you budding ballerinas out there, though you may have to fight it out with the professional dancers or the fire eaters for space, that’s if the stilt walkers haven’t got you first, but that’s another story.

In the main room there are plenty of different levels, as well as a balcony bar and a VIP room, though as they wouldn’t let me in it’s probably really rubbish in there anyway. As the owners spent £7 million refurbishing the club the décor is of a very high standard as is the lighting and sound systems. In the main room some of the original beams have been retained and this makes a very interesting feature, if you like that sort of thing, and to be honest, who doesn’t? The only complaint I have about the sound is that it’s a bit loud in the seating areas, which can be annoying when trying to have a chat, or then again it might just be me getting old. The toilets share wash basins, so don’t get confused when you go in there, it’s easy to find the blokes, just follow the smell, mmm, nice.

Overall I would say that I enjoyed my night out at Creation and would go to another Retro event there. Non of the other days really appeal to me as the music would be too commercial and the crowd would be pissed up students trying to pull,
or, alternatively, at the weekend, pissed up locals trying to pull. Not for me thanks. But if you enjoy the more commercial side of clubbing then I would say that Creation is certainly a lot better venue than any of the other mainstream clubs in Leeds, such as Majestyk and Heaven and Hell, and its well worth a visit, especially when you get in for free, come on.
