Oceana Nightclub (Southampton)
by Assassin4273
I'm not going to lie I'm writing this review with a bit of a hangover, this was ultimately caused by the alcohol i consumed last night at Oceania in Southampton. It was the first time Ive been and i thought it would be best to write the review while last nights experiences are still fresh in my mind.
Firstly let me say my ... first time there will not be my last, it was an absolutely amazing night and i cant wait to go again. Its the first time i have been to an Oceania, i have heard a lot about them and that there is one in all the big clubbing cities of England, so when i got offered the opportunity to go, to see Calvin Harris last night i said yes in a flash, and I'm so glad i did.
The club is located in a huge leisure complex, and from the outside its size is daunting. You go through a lobby, which also has an Odean cinema, a Frankie and Benny's and another restaurant. Once inside you are a sort of hub bar area which has 3 other rooms of it, each with their own style, age limit and opening times. we stayed in the bar till about 11, then we ushered into Tahiti bar which was slightly smaller with leather couches and we got given a free shot each and also a free glass of champagne and some food which i ate in seconds. this was a very cool experience and i liked the way they were treating everyone like VIPs. After about another hour we were allowed upstairs into the main area which had a huge DJ set and massive dance floor with more bars around it. then off this was one final room which was retro with an old school light up squares dance floor.
It was an absolutely brilliant night, with a big guest appearance, free food and drinks and all other drinks i bought were at a reasonable price. And i cant wait to go back again. Read the complete review |

Club de Fromage (London)
by BumpyBump
I discovered this little gem of a club three years ago, on their opening night. I have been a regular ever since and they are celebrating their 3rd birthday this month having gone from strength to strength. Club de Fromage does exactly what it says on the tin - it is a club night packed full of cheesy tunes and cheesy DJs. People go ... there to dance, have fun, drink and cop off and the availability for doing all of this is in abundance.
The event is held every Saturday night at the Islington Academy (N1 Centre). There is always a massive queue outside so should really buy your tickets early. The night starts at 10pm but doesn't really get busy until after the pubs shut, and goes on until about 3.30am. There are two bars in the venue (one on each side of the room) and, even though the drinks are overpriced (about £4 a drink), there is always a queue at the bar. Club de Fromage is run by 'Fat Tony' and 'Slow Alfie' (the DJs dressed up) and musically you should expect anything from Britney to Whitney to Duran Duran. As long as it can be classed as 'cheese' they will play it. They do take requests if you send them an email via their website.
Fromage often runs themed nights (Grease, geeks or cowboys, to give you an idea) and anyone going in appropriate fancy dress for the theme gets to jump the queue. You can view details about what nights they are running on the Club de Fromage website. You can also subscribe to their group on Facebook and you will be emailed details in advance. Each week they hold a meat pie raffle, and they give away the raffle tickets for free (although you have to be able to push to the front of the stage) and the winner wins a sausage roll or similar. They also frequently have air-guitarists on stage for a few songs, but that part is a bit rubbish if you ask me because every stops dancing in order to stare at the stage and the whole atmosphere just gets ruined.
There is no dress code at Fromage, but you will often see people dressed up. The place is always packed and you do struggle for space to dance when it hits its peak, and be warned that the floor can get very slippery in there (I have seen many a woman go a over t). The clientele is a mixed bag. You get all age groups in there and all types of people - from tarts to indie kids. There isn't that much of a meat-market feel to it, but there are plenty of people on the pull if that's what you're after. But I would say that mostly you see large groups of friends in there who have just gone for a giggle and a dance. There is quite a laid-back feel to it and I have never seen any trouble in there to speak of.
The tickets cost £6.50 (plus booking fee) in advance (you can buy online or over the phone) or they are £8 on the night if you get there before midnight, and £10 afer midnight. NUS holders get in for £6 all night long. £2 to put your coat or bag in which I think is a disgrace, but they've got you over a barrel by the time you're in there.
All in all it's a fun night, but you should expect it to be busy and you should expect to spend a fair bit of cash. Not bad though for a guaranteed night of cheese. Read the complete review |

Strawberry Moons (Kent)
by valve90210
The Maidstone branch of Strawberry Moons opened a few years ago now, in a building which became an empty space after the Ro9bert Dyas store reduced in size by about half.
The building was nicely cleaned up and had quite extensive rennovations to make it look nice and fresh and quite stylish with marble tiles and brass door ... handles etc etc.
This is really as much as I can tell you about the club because I have never managed to get in. My friends and I have tried on a number of occassions and have failed to get in each and every time without exception. It seems the door staff operate a policy whereby if your face doesn't fit you won't get in.
The reasons my friends and I have been given have ranged from "No groups of lads"...when there were only three of us trying to get in, "it's one in one out at the moment" when we have clearly seen them let in groups of others in just in front of us and indeed after us to a simple "not tonight" for seemingly no reason.
Now, I could understand this if my friends and I were scruffy, or drunken or looked like trouble but we don't, half my friends don't really drink, we're always well dressed, shirts and shoes etc etc. We're not rowdy in the queue and none of us have ever caused any trouble anywhere.
The only thing which I think counts against us is the fact that none of us your typical fashion conscious mindless style sheep with the latest shirt etc from the latest trendy shop. We each have our own tastes and styles which might mean our faces don't fit with the image the club is trying to portray.
From reports from people I know that have managed to get in, it's alright inside, nothing special just your typical club with bars, dance areas etc etc and a typical range of music from a bit dancy to a bit RnB-ish to a bit cheesey. Havin heard this, I have never again attempted to get in because not only would I still be unlikely to manage it, but frankly I don't want to spend my time in a place which clearly has an overblown sense of it's own status...at the end of the day it's a bog standard chain club in a town which is just like any other!!!
If I could give a lower mark than 1 star I would!!! Read the complete review |
