Goa..In our minds it seems to promise mystery, adventure and a complete seperation from reality. For the clubber this promise is realised in the form of strange parties, in strange places, and populated by the strangest people. If you want to find the true Goan dance-music experience you should head to Anguna, where most of the remaining Hippy and traveller population settle for months of free parties. Clubs in the way we know them in England do not exist here; all venues are outdoors and exotically located but it is the Trance and Full Moon parties that are the essense of Goa. Usually people will gather to watch the sun go down at a beach bar where it is easy to find out where the party for that evening is being put on. Usually it will be in the woods, on open ground, or on the beach. The music is nearly always psychadelic trance; hard, energetic and relentless......great to dance to on the sand not so good for chilling out and chatting to your mates. Most of the parties have locals selling food, drinks, jewellery, fabrics etc and prices are ridiculously cheap when you consider what we would pay in a London club for a small bottle of water. Most parties will run through the night and through until midday. There is nothing quite like dancing on the sand to pounding music while the sun comes up...though finally being able to see the faces of the people around you can be both disturbing and relieving at the same time. The sound quality at these parties is always fantastic; the music is usually played from minidisks or DAT as vinyl records tend to melt. Most people speak English and you will meet an interesting mix from all over the world, though many may not be in the best states to start interesting conversations with. The general consensus at such parties is to dance and dance hard. Another advantage is that you can come and go as you please. Going off for some sleep and then coming back to d
ance in the morning sun is always an option when you're in Anguna. Finally I should give some words of warning about the dangers of partying in Goa. There are bigger clubs that are not run by the free party crew....these often involve heavy drinking and some violence, and a large police presence(the Goan police are notoriously corrupt and dangerous). Also when at parties remember to keep drinking fluids and do not fall asleep out of the shade...temperature will quickly sore into the 90's when the sun comes up. Lastly, do not forget where you your moped is parked, everyone's got one and they all look very similar. Walking home through cobra country in 95 degreee heat is not fun!
