Shine @ Qubsu (Belfast)
by nomie
I have been going to Shine in the Mandela Hall in Queen's Student's Union for nearly two years and I still love it! The atmosphere is always great and they have some of the best names in house, drum and bass and techno DJs playing, for example the legendary Carl Cox! I was introduced to Shine by my boyfriend who had ... been going there for a few years himself. I was a bit cautious, having always stuck to places I knew- Hunters, Laverys and the like- and also having no interest in the type of music played there. I much prefered trance and commercial dance music at the time. I can't even remember who was playing that first night, but I do remember the buzz I felt as soon as I'd stepped into the club and heard the thumpin' music. I have been many times since then, and most of the best nights out I've had have been in Shine. The only problem is most of my friends still stick to more commercial places and won't even give Shine a go. Shine is open every Saturday night from 9pm until at least 2pm (it has a late licence), although it doesn't get going until about 11pm. It is really necessary to stay right until the very end and be dancing to the last tune while the lights are on! There are a few resident DJs who play alongside the bigger names. At least once a month there is a well known DJ playing. They also have special nights, such as the birthday party in October, and the New Year's Eve party. On these occasions there are normally more rooms open and different DJs play in the various rooms. By far the best time I went was New Year's Eve 1999! When Carl Cox is playing there is also a brilliant atmosphere. I would recommend Shine to anyone who likes going out (over 18's only mind!). You don't even have to dress up that much, although most people do. Bring photographic ID and prepare to be searched at the door. Students get one pound off with their card.

POD (Dublin)
by hot_rock_chick
The Pod nightclub is actually part of the Pod 'complex' that is three separate but joined buildings; the Chocolate bar, the Redbox (highly recommended) and the Pod. It's quite confusing at first and wasn't quite sure which venue I waas in, but it dosen't really matter because the whole place is good fun. On ... the nights that I have been there, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, it has mainly been house music, mixed with a bit of trance. There are live Dj's spinning the decks, and it can go from harder house to the more commercial stuff. The actual Pod nightclub itself is quite small in comparison to the Redbox, which is spacious and has some interesting decor. Drinks are expensive in the Pod nightclub, a vodka and coke can cost £4 even on a student night. Another thing is the bouncers who always seem to have a attitude problem whatever night you go, and however your dressed. Still, the people in the Pod are always friendly, happy types ready for a boogie. There is a excellent R'n'B night on Thursday's in the Pod which makes a change to the house music. The club is supposed to be a bit of a celebrity haunt, or so I had been told (well Boyzone have filmed videos here?!!!!!) but to tell you the truth I didn't spot any even on a Saturday night, and even in the VIP room, which by the way is rubbish. Still, the Pod always makes for a good night because the people in there make it so.
