Advantages: Friendly locals, good looking ladies & the good atmosphere
Disadvantages: Quite expensive drinks, very de-centralised, strict over 21s.
I spent 4 days in LA a few months ago, and feel i had a brilliant time. But this wasn't due to LA but the good friends i was with. Having lived all my life in London, LA was a completely different environment to what i was used to. Not only is it very de-centralised, with bars, pubs & clubs sparsily distributed over very large distances making a pub crawl impossible, but the Yanks are very strict with their over-21s licensing laws. However unlike here in England, there is no stigma attached to being asked for ID when entering such premises, and it was not uncommon to see a long queue of folks in their mid 20s - 30s queuing up with their passports/ driving permits readily displayed. I was very disappointed with the choice and quality of drinking establishments in LA. To be honest there isn't much of a drinking culture in LA as there is in many parts on England. Because of the strict over 21 laws, most college students stick with their house parties, leaving LA bars & clubs for the more mature adults, or the few with convincing fake IDs. I would not recommend LA as any sort of 'clubbing' or 'drinking' holiday destination, however there are a few good, atmospheric & very lively bars should you be heading to LA. An Irish pub/club called 'Dublins' & a Japanese restaurant/bar/club directly opposite called 'Miyages', both situated on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, are the places to be seen on Fri & Sat nights & are busy every day of the week. Not only do they get ram-packed inside, but outside every hip 'West Hollwooder' can be seen cruising down the strip in their convertible Jeep, leading to considerable traffic jams when they close dead on 2am!! Even the police join in to get everybody off home!

pink_lady - 07/12/01 this is very true. I am living in LA for a year at the moment and I am actually horrified by the lack of nightlife. Sadly I am only 20 and therefore it cam as a shock to me to suddenly have no life.....however with the aid of a cunning fake ID I have been to a few clubs and I have also bveen to some terrible over 18 nights. Like the ones they have in england for people under 18.....oh well one day I will be back in England where the beer flows freely, a taxi doesnt cost you about 50 quid to go down the street and you dont have to travel the equivalent of london to liverpool just to get to the next pub!! |
