Advantages: Great Selection of clubs, No Dress Codes, Friendly Locals

Disadvantages: 'Normal' drink prices expensive

For the past week I have been in Newquay with some friends. In between the sunny beaches (yes, it was sunny! All week!) and the local attractions, there were quite a few pubs, bars and clubs that we visited. By only visiting certain places on certain nights my opinion may vary drastically to the next persons.

Although this section is for nightclubs in Newquay I have added a couple of pubs as they go hand in hand with the clubs, either they are joined to them or the do deals with each other in terms of entry prices etc.

So here goes, in no particular order;

~ The Met Bar & Restaurant

For the quiet pre-pub drink this place doesn’t do badly. Apart from the guy behind the bar who had difficultly understanding how to pour an AfterShock - “I’ve never done this before”. From the outside it looks like a restaurant with spacious wooden furniture with clean lines although when I was in there everyone was drinking.

~ The Barracuda Bar

Formally The Springbok and before that The Blue Lagoon. This place looks huge from the outside and sits on the edge of the cliff. I’ve been told it used to be a swimming pool and it looks like it, as the far wall is all glass facing out to the sea.

During the day they serve meals (2 for £6) in the small front bar. At night they open up the main area (also during football matches for the 21 FOOT SCREEN!!). All the tables are at the side and there is a large dance area on a raised floor. The DJ box is more like a beach hut in the corner with a stage and there are a couple of podiums.

On a Monday and Friday it is Pound Party when a selection of about 30 different drinks are...a pound! The club nights (until 2am) are £2/3 entry.

~ Berties

I had heard many things about this place. This place is rocking! It is a pub with an adjoining club that opens until 2am. This is the place everyone is. It is on many levels so there are a lot of stairs so you have to be that extra bit careful after a few.

On a Monday night it is bargain night. Pints are 70p! Shot of vodka? 80p. Certain weeknights mean certain clubs. Monday = Berties.

~ Buzios

This is the place to just relax. Open all day and night. The interior is posh; leather smooth cubicles and the rest. Details like the fact a box of matches is on each table, you get your pint in its proper manufactures glass.

On three levels, Buzios is quite large in size. First floor is the bar and main seating area. They serve food until the evening and with the large French Doors open with the sun shining you can’t beat it. Second Floor is the club floor, only open in the evening with a DJ with selected drink Promotions.

The Third Floor is the Pool Tables. About 8 Pool Tables and two US 8 Ball tables. £1 per game or £6 per hour. There is a bar on this floor as well.

~ The Beach

A nightclub only (most in Newquay have an adjoining bar). This place was a disappointment. They have great drink promotions every night where there are selected drinks at £1.50 that are good value but the whole place could do with improvement.

Covered all outside the square building are signs saying ‘4 Bars, 3 Floors, 2 DJs’. Well they are in the middle of some sort of refurbishment (not advertised) that means ‘2 Bars, 1 Floor, 1 DJ’. The place was tiny but used the ‘Mirror On Every Wall To Appear Large
r’ trick. The dancefloor was sticky from all the spilt drink. There are loads of Bouncers (with attitude) but none enforce the sign on the pillars saying no drinks on the dancefloor.

£3 to get in was not worth it. This place I would expect to be free, even with the drink offers. They cram far too many people in there and it gets absolutely packed with no room to swing a cat, let alone dance.

~ The Sailors

Thursday night is Sailors night. Two for One on drinks. The Sailors is another establishment where half is a pub and the other is the club. Unfortunately as we had to leave early on the Friday morning so I only got as far as the pub.

The interior is sailor themed with related items on the walls. The pub has a DJ playing popular pop and dance. The club is £3 to get in and according to another member of the group (more hardened than me) the club is very good.

~ The Central

As you may have guessed, this pub is in the middle of the town. Many seats outside and many more in this pub is a great place to have a few drinks. Big deals on the Vodka & Red Bull Pitchers.

~ The Chy

The Chy is another of the classier bars with the nice furniture ideal to chill out to in the afternoon. There is a balcony overlooking the beach that is great on a nice day. Watch out for the seagulls though, if you manage to keep your food to yourself they are guaranteed to leave a ‘memento’ on your clothing/head/food.

~ Overall

Newquay is a great place to go as the nightlife is great, you get many stag/hen parties there and it is very easy to make friends. The locals are very laid back and, according to my cabbie, for the amount of people who visit the violence and trouble is quite low.

It’s worth picking
up a club guide or speaking to some locals, as only certain clubs are open during the week. When we went to The Beach (£3 entry) we left after one drink as we weren’t impressed, walked around the rest of the town and realised nothing else was open so ended back up in there (Add another £3 each!).

Thanks for Reading

I've never been interested in going to Newquay- hadn't heard anything particulary great about it till now. Having my hen-night in December (actually, i'll probably have to have about 3 for all the different groups of people) - maybe we'll make this the place for one of them :0)

Sounds great! It's not somewhere I've ever been before but I might look into it for a short break during the summer :o)
