Fancy a dip in the Ocean? Ocean nightclub, Nottingham
Member Name: louisechackett
Advantages: cheap, good mix of music, large area for dancing
Disadvantages: funny smell
My sister moved to Nottingham in September to start a law degree and as we are close it was quite a shock to the system for me. We said we would try and get together when we could and so my cousin and I went down to Nottingham for a night out with my sister and her friends back in November last year. This is my review of the club and our night.
Ocean can be found at Greyfriar Gate, Nottingham NG1 7EF. Tel:(0115) 941 1941. They do have a website which is easily found by googling Ocean Nottingham but there isn't a massive amount of information on there really.
From the off it is important to note that Ocean is a student venue in Nottingham. Obviously I am not a student but my sister contacted Ocean and you are allowed to bring a guest with you providing that you book them on to the night and give their name. From what we gathered from the night it is actually one guest per student but as my sisters friends were out with us that night one of them adopted me as their guest whilst my sister took my cousin in with her and it was fine.
Doors open at ten pm but as we had pre booked and paid online for the night we didn't arrive there until probably around 11.30pm but there was no real queue there. We paid £3 online for entry before 12 but it will cost you £5 should you pay on the door on the night. Like an idiot I forgot my ID and thankfully wasn't asked for any but I would totally recommend that you do take ID with you because it wouldn't be good to be turned away on the night!
Inside the club I was actually quite surprised initially by the size of the club! There is plenty of room around the walk ways but there is also a really good sized dance floor as well which is obviously paramount to a student club in my opinion. There is also an upstairs section which is opened up once the club is really busy. It didn't actually open on the Saturday night that we attended and to be fair I felt the club was busy but my sister informed me that it got much busy than when we went. She also informs me that upstairs is the ideal place to "spot the potential" and I do use her words there! Around there are some sofa type seats but most people seemed to stand and dance and so they were only seen used towards the end of the night when people started coupling up!
There are four bars in Ocean and whilst these aren't huge it does give you plenty of options for getting a drink. We all pre drunk at my sisters flat before heading out so we only bought one drink in the club and this was a bottle of VK for the cheap price of just £1.50! I could get used to student nights I think! We were served quickly and whilst the staffs weren't overly enthusiastic they did their job efficiently.
There is a bit of a funny smell when you walk in to Ocean which we had been pre warned about and at first it did hit us quite hard. We presumed it could only have been the spilt alcohol on the carpet floors and it would make sense to get rid of that I think! The smell soon becomes unnoticeable though and it isn't a massive deal. The club seemed pretty nice and clean otherwise. Ladies toilets seemed to be upstairs but there were plenty of them and they were spacious enough with taps, soap and mirrors for touching up make up.
What I loved about Ocean was the fact that they played such a range of music and there really will be something for everyone. For pop fans there are things like One Direction and there is an amusing video of us all dancing around to live while your young on facebook currently! There are also dance tracks, indie tracks, R&B and slower wind down songs played at the end of the night. I can honestly say that Ocean is probably the only place I have been where I have been happy to have a dance to every song that came on. I have varied taste in music and so I was just as happy listening to teenage dirtbag and Mr Brightside as I was Gangnam style and what makes you beautiful! Regular visitors to Ocean will know that when the bay watch theme tune is played that tops come off.....and we say this in action on the night we were there with girls and boys all waving their tops around their heads! This obviously isn't compulsory though and thank goodness I was wearing a dress as NOBODY wants to see that!
There are themed nights at Ocean which are University specific and I believe the Wednesday and the Saturday belong to Nottingham Trent University whilst the Friday is for the University of Nottingham students. I believe Wednesdays in Ocean are often fancy dress though to be fair there was plenty of fancy dress about when we went on the Saturday too!
Dress code I think must be quite relaxed. There were girls dressed up to the nines in tiny dresses and heels but then my sister and her friends all went out in dresses and flat shoes and I followed with that and loved the fact that I didn't feel out of place and my feet weren't aching from dancing all night long! We left Ocean just before 3am and I believe it does shut at 3. There were plenty of taxis waiting outside for taking people back to their accommodations but I would say make sure it is a firm you are familiar with as there are too many horror stories about taxis in Nottingham for my liking!
I can honestly say that I cannot wait until the next time I go to see my sister in Nottingham because to me Ocean is the perfect club music wise! There is a great atmosphere in there and I didn't see any fighting or anything nasty like that-just people having a good time! My sisters and her friends joke about "ocean devotion" but I can see why they love it and I look forward to my next "dip" in the ocean!
Thanks for reading my review!
Summary: I loved it!
