Patsy's was a legendary nightclub situated in Ryde on the Isle of Wight. It played non-mainstream music, and had extremely lax security, meaning many under 18's were able to enter the premises and experience club life for the first time. I'm not suggesting that this was particularly a good thing, but at the time I don't remember ever seeing any trouble in there, and perhaps the teenagers of only ten years ago were a little better behaved than they are today - who knows.

The club closed quite a few years ago now, but if you mention Patsy's to a local, most people seem to have a story to tell. For me, it was probably the first night club I ever went to, and I have fond memories of the place. I remember spending one particular New Years Eve there - perhaps 1998, and being a 17 or 18 year old I was easily impressed.

In hindsight, it was a pretty average venue - with incredibly sticky floors and long fabric seats which always seemed wet from years of people spilling alcohol on them. It was very dark inside, and had a few smaller rooms which you were free to wander in and out of. The small dance-floor was surrounded by mirrors which were always steamed up and moist, and you would get a real mix of people in there.

To be honest, I don't remember to much of the place except that it was the dingy and alternative characteristics of the venue that i've mentioned above, which made it what it was.

I doubt it would be able to operate in todays climate if it ever decided to open again - and I expect it would be a up-market trendy kind of place, but that's not what it was all about.

Although i've made it sound like nothing special, Patsy's was an excellent nightclub which I look back on with fond memories.

Summary: Cool Venue
