Po na na....This is a very cosy club with an underground feel to it, the club is heavily scented with incense sticks and has lots of comfortable seating with even a futon on one of the seats which you can lie right back on. prices to get in are usually about a fiver. If it's someones birthday though definately ring ahead to get on the guestlist as prices are much cheaper this way! They play a good range of music (not too pretentious) anything from Mary J Blige to Dolly Parton really! The colour scheme is kind of terracotta colours and it really makes you feel like you are in Morocco or Spain. They have a wonderful range of cocktails which are quite reasonably priced at between 5.50 and 7 pounds. I drink jager meister and red bull - the mighty jagerbomb! whenever I'm in here though and they are very cheap at only 2.50 each! although they once did run out of jager meister probably due to the great price! It has a large dance floor area and never seems to take too long to get served at the bar - I have yet to work out why this is though! I think the best thing about po na na though is the large and very cosy decked outside area they have created for smokers (at least I know this is true of the Bristol one) It is under a sort of tent and fully heated with seating so that smokers don't even really feel like their outside! (I'm not a smoker and never have been but I do think this is really good) Most Po na na's I have been to, you have to go down some stairs to get in but this kind of adds the the underground feeling of it, there is also often a large queue but I think it is a very popular clubbing destination. I usually go on a Saturday but I know that there are other nights like 80's nights (free glow-sticks) and student nights on a thursday (free shisha!).
Po na na is one of the run of the mill theme club/bars but with a difference. It’s a club that uses strategically placed mirrors to make the area look bigger, but there can be some mishaps because of them. When you walk in to the place, most people on their first visit do not realise that there’s a very large mirror directly in front of you, and they walk into it. (Myself included, but I was quite drunk at the time.) After turning left at the mirror, there are the stains down to contend with, (not easy). Then you actually enter the club area. The first thing that most notice is how small the actual club looks, but looks can be deceiving. There is many little coves with tables, and mirrors all round the area, from where ever you are in the night club, it give the impression that you are all alone or part of a full club. The only other real thing apart from the toilets is the small dance floor, (and I do mean small), the music that is played varies from night to night. There is only one medium bar, which usually gets quite packed towards the end of the evening. The cocktail list is rather good, the prices of the whole bar is usual club prices but sometimes more expensive. The toilets are usually clean but do end up like stereotypical club toilets by the end of the evening. Overall, po na na is a good club for place for couples or people who does not like “clubby” clubs. This is not really a club for students, (or playing truth or dare) but is well worth a look for the specialised décor and “different” more relaxed atmosphere.
