Rock City (Nottingham)
Advantages: Thursday nights, location
Disadvantages: Not for everyone
Being a student in Nottingham means going out to quite a few different bars and clubs. One which has been a favourite over the past two years is Rock City. The club is situated on Talbot Street, which is only a 5 minute walk at most from the city center. This means that you can go elsewhere beforehand if you want to or straight there if you go out late. This year I live pretty much in the city center so Rock City is now within walking distance for me.
Rock City is not only a club, it also has gig nights which have had some quite famous names play there in the past. Over the next couple of months, Adam Ant, Rizzle Kicks, Ellie Goulding and Dappy are all playing there. Although the club is called Rock City, it is obviously not a place only for rock music which is what I first thought it was. Ticket prices for these gigs are around the same price as you can expect from an arena although bands who aren't as well-known aren't nearly as expensive to see.
I have only ever been to Rock City on a Thursday night as it is student night and drinks are 2-4-1. You can expect to pay £5 on the door on a Thursday to get in but if you get there early and it's empty, you can sometimes get in for free. There are different theme nights on other nights during the week such as Love Shack on a Friday which plays club anthems. Thursday nights are a great night mostly because of the music that is played. There are three rooms open all of which play something different. The main room plays club and rave music mostly, the smaller room on the main level plays rock and alternative music while the basement plays chart music and cheesy stuff most of the time.
I generally end up in the basement after not very long as it is never as packed as the main room. The basement has a good range of music which you can dance to easily. The only real problem here is that the floor gets very wet and sticky so you need to be careful especially if you're a girl going out in heels. I remember my first ever night out here and I spent a lot of it trying to stay upright in insanely high heels. I was so scared of falling over and breaking something!
As I said, drinks on a Thursday night are 2-4-1 but they aren't very cheap to start with. Last year, Rock City broke the record for the number of Jagerbombs sold in one night due to this offer being on and them only being £1. Other drinks are more expensive though and you can expect to pay around £3 or £3.50 for a bottle but considering you get another free, it isn't too bad. Be careful when ordering drinks too because the bar staff will give you 2 even if you only want one. My flatemate had a bad experience with this when she ordered a pint and had to carry 2 around a packed club for a while before she finished them.
Rock City has plenty of toilets although they can be quite hard to find when you're drunk. There is also a large cloak room in the foyer which is great for when you're going out in the winter or when it rains. To have your coat checked will cost around £2 but it is well worth it if it means not having to carry it around for the whole night. This part of the club gets so busy though at the end of the night so be prepared for a long wait or go half an hour before closing time to pick up your items.
Overall, Rock City is your average club but they do try to cater to everyone. The drinks are overpriced on a normal night but student night is worth going to if you are actually a student. I love it here and I'm sad this will be my last year going here.
Summary: A good club
