Advantages: Big DJs, Great music, Brilliant atmosphere

Disadvantages: Pricey in Belfast standards!, Only once a week!

I have been going to Shine in the Mandela Hall in Queen's Student's Union for nearly two years and I still love it! The atmosphere is always great and they have some of the best names in house, drum and bass and techno DJs playing, for example the legendary Carl Cox!

I was introduced to Shine by my boyfriend who had been going there for a few years himself. I was a bit cautious, having always stuck to places I knew- Hunters, Laverys and the like- and also having no interest in the type of music played there. I much prefered trance and commercial dance music at the time.

I can't even remember who was playing that first night, but I do remember the buzz I felt as soon as I'd stepped into the club and heard the thumpin' music. I have been many times since then, and most of the best nights out I've had have been in Shine. The only problem is most of my friends still stick to more commercial places and won't even give Shine a go.

Shine is open every Saturday night from 9pm until at least 2pm (it has a late licence), although it doesn't get going until about 11pm. It is really necessary to stay right until the very end and be dancing to the last tune while the lights are on!

There are a few resident DJs who play alongside the bigger names. At least once a month there is a well known DJ playing. They also have special nights, such as the birthday party in October, and the New Year's Eve party. On these occasions there are normally more rooms open and different DJs play in the various rooms. By far the best time I went was New Year's Eve 1999! When Carl Cox is playing there is also a brilliant atmosphere.

I would recommend Shine to anyone who likes going out (over 18's only mind!). You don't even have to dress up that much, although most people do. Bring photographic ID and prepare to be searched at the door. Students get one pound off with their card.
