Advantages: good music, good crowd

Disadvantages: nasty drinks

Siberia on a Thursday night, oh how I could talk about this club for hours. I could go on about the countless times I’ve been knocked to the floor during ‘Wait And Bleed’ the times I’ve sat in the corner holding my head regretting taking advantage of the 70p vodka or the times they’ve generally played way too much metal.

Regardless, I love this club. This club is the highlight of my social week. It’s small enough to have the cosy atmosphere but big enough to have a fair sized bar and dance floor and plenty of seats when you’ve just not in the mood.

The DJ is a pretty cool guy and takes requests no matter what they are. You can even take your own cd’s and he’ll play them. What a guy. Once he even played a really badly produced demo from my band. The sound quality was terrible and the vocals uninterpretable, but did he turn it off, no way.

The drinks selection is pretty limited but this is made up for by the sheer cheapness of them. A bottle of beer will cost you either 75p for a Carling or £1 for a Grolsh. Not bad at all. There are some alcopops subject to promotion but I can’t stand them. The lemon drinks taste like mouthwash so I daren’t think what the rest are like.

The music is quite varied but after going for about a year now it’s a little predictable. The night is mainly made up with requests and since it has such a diverse student audience there’s everything from indie to metal.

Mentioning indie, it was originally and is still advertised as an Indie night which was a pleasant surprise from the norm of cheesy pop. The club is in Bury, which isn’t exactly Manchester. In fact its about 8 miles from the town centre and as Siberia is the only club in this area catering for an alternative crowd you usually get pretty good numbers of people.

As I said you’ll get everything from Fear Factory to the Stone Roses and all in betwe
en. The dance floor is a little small and has tendencies to get a little rough during some of the heavier songs. Most noticeably Rage Against The Machine. Security is pretty lack with only about three people on the door. Entry fee is always cheap but varies throughout the night. There are usually some quite nice people on the door or just around handing out flyers so it’s even cheap.

If you’re in the area, give it a try.

Ah, Bury - I know it well. Didn't think there was much nightlife there, but then I'm a bit past that kind of thing.
