Advantages: Range of music, 'Big name' DJ's
Disadvantages: Hot and sweaty, crowded, expensive
The Space is a relatively new addition to the Leeds club scene, it opened a year and a half ago near the corn exchange in the town centre, close to a lot of the trendy bars and also close to the canal. The club is located down a back alley, but it is easily given away by the long ques on most nights. Once beating the que's and entering the club you go down some stairs into a small reception room, if you then turn right you are thrust into the main room, and left into the smaller second room. The whole club has a very modern feel about it, decorated in white with electric blue lighting and metallic seating. The second room has a small dancefloor, a large(ish) bar, a small seating area and the VIP lounge. In the main room the bar stretches down the side of the dancefloor with the dj boothe at the far end of the room. There is also a small amount of seats at the back of the room. The toilets are located off the reception room, and although they are quite small they are also quite clean (for a club) and have tv screens in them so you have something to look at whilst you are relieving yourself. As the club is underground all the ceilings are low, this makes the club very hot and sweaty and this can become a major problem as the night wears on. Another problem that the Space has in both rooms is it's lack of dancefloor definition, the bar just merges with the dancefloor without a step, this causes a lot of pushing and shoving as clubbers have to push past to get themselves a drink, and as the club is always very busy this can become quite annoying. Enough about the layout of the club, here are the different nights: Monday - deep house with resident Buckley (basics) Tuesday - Chopper, eclectic mix of all dance music Wednesday - Base, hard house with residents Jez and Charlie (sundissential), also many guests such as Fergie, Lisa Lashes, Tidy Boys etc... Thursday - Stush, drum + bass wit
h guests like Hype, Grooverider etc.. Friday - Union, progressive trance fest with Seb Fontaine (monthly) and guests such as Breeder, Timo Mass, Darren Emerson etc... Saturday - funky house with guests such as Joey Negro, Norman Jay etc.. During the week entrance is about £4 with different drinks offers each day, and at the weekend entry is about £10 and all the drinks are expensive. Overall I would say Space offers a good selection of music with something for most people. The club is small (500) so you need to get there early and the night can be quite expensive at the weekend, but apart from this they have some 'big name' dj's and the crowd is usually up for it, so give it a go, you might just like it.

- 25/06/01 What anoys me is when you get the same people who spend the whole night walking through the dancefloor. It's like they're there to be seen, not to dance. There's a bar for that.
Good review.

- 16/05/01 It is not actually to do with Space in Ibiza, they just thought the name sounded good. Though it was featured on Cream uncovered on Sky 1 for some reason. |
