Advantages: Laid-back, fun, great for a cheap night out.
Disadvantages: Not the nicest of interiors.
The Cookie Club is a club in Nottingham city centre for the alternative crowd.
The Place: The Cookie Club is situated up an alley off market square in Nottingham (word of warning: it is on a cobbled street so if you wear heels watch out - I have had lots of shoe-related disasters on this street!). It is a great location - close to the town centre, opposite a cash point, round the corner from taxi ranks and bus stops and opposite Wetherspoons! There are 3 floors - 2 floors with a bar and dance floor and a chill out room with seating. Apparently there is also a food bar - I am convinced this is an urban myth, having been here several times I have never seen it!!
It is open every night apart from Thursday and Sunday, with a different event on each night. Monday's is 'Motherfunker' - a mish-mash of Indie, Dance and Hip-Hop. Tuesday is 'Meltdown' - a mixture of Emo, Punk and Ska. Wednesday is 'The Big Wednesday' - a student night with indie/alternative music. Friday is 'Transmission' - playing more mainstream music and retro stuff. Saturday is 'Rise and Shine' - a mix of Indie classics and chart tunes. It's pretty cheap to get in £1 with an NUS card before 11pm, and never more than £6. Drinks are reasonably priced £1.50 for a single and mixer. It's open from 10.30pm - 3am most nights.
My Experience There: While I was at uni, The Cookie Club was a regular haunt, and consequently the majority of people there are students, even on the weekend. It is definitely the place to go if you can't be bothered getting dressed up to go out - if you wear jeans and converse you will fit right in! The Big Wednesday is a great night to go if you're a fan of Indie music. They play a lot of Indie classics as well as contemporary stuff, to give you an idea, here are the top 5 tunes: Kings Of Leon - Sex On Fire, Ting- Tings - Shut Up And Let Me Go, Foals - Cassius, Killers - Mr Brightside, Arctic Monkeys - When The Sun Goes Down. I like it because if you're 'Indie-lite' (as I like to think I am!) then you don't feel out of place because there is not too much obscure Indie stuff. Downstairs is more for the alternative crowd - they play a mix of emo, punk and ska, such as: House Of Pain - Jump Around, Pendulum - Propane Nightmare, System Of A Down - BYOB. Again this is great because it plays some of the more familiar stuff as well as obscure stuff. The venue itself is pretty large, I would recommend not getting there till 11.30 pm onwards, because before then it is pretty dead, but hit 11.30 and it becomes packed with people, so the dance floor gets pretty insane. Despite how busy it gets there are loads of staff and it never takes long to get served like in most clubs. The Cookie Club doesn't have the nicest interior - it is pretty dark and sweaty but I think that just adds to its charm! I have honestly had some of my best nights out here - everyone is really laid back and you can go in jeans and t-shirt, dance and jump around like you're mad and fall down stairs (yes this happened to me) and everyone will just laugh it off. The Cookie Club is definitely not the place to go if you want to have a dressed up night out and impress anyone, but if you're looking for a laid-back fun night out in a place that never takes itself too seriously then this is the place to go!
Summary: A great alternative club for a laid-back night out, but not for a dressed-up evening.

- 04/07/09 Oh how I miss the Cookie Club. Loved reading this review - thank you. Moved from Nottingham to London 3 years ago and this is definitely one of my most missed places. There did USED to be a food bar - honest, there did - but I think they got rid of it years back. Do you still get a lolly on the way in? |
