The Fez club is situated slap bang in the centre of Cambridge, just off the market square down a little back street, like all good clubs. If the big beefy bouncers weren't standing outside then you might have walked right past, assuming that you were just walking around Cambridge for the sheer hell of it that is.

Once you've found the mysterious cavern you pay your dollars and are immediately shepparded up the stairs by the aforementioned burly bouncers. Once you reach the first floor you can either carry on up to the toilets or get stuck into the club. We chose the latter, but, oh no, once again we were forced to make another decision straight away. Nightmare. Were we to proceed into the dancefloor and bar area, or the lounge? Well, that one wasn't too tricky for our educated minds as the bat belt indicated to the bar, and who would doubt the bat belt? Not I, certainly. So to the bar and after a lengthy wait the bevies were finally weighed in. Not too pricey either, only £2 for a bottle of carling, which in my book is a steal, certainly. So what now? Ah, a seat, so we trekked though to the lounge and found a place lying down on a padded area. So, everything sorted? Now was the time to start noticing what we had let ourselves in for.

The club is decorated in a very Arabian, desert style. There are drapes hanging from the ceiling and the colour scheme was browns and oranges. I liked. There were loads of places to sit, an loads of little cubby holes where you could hide away from the rest of the club. The lighting was dim and the ceilings low, there were candles scattered everywhere and there was a real chilled out atmosphere about the place. The crowd was young, with a lot of students, well you can't have everything, can you? There was no dress code, though most people had made the effort, which is always nice to see.

Just like Craig David we chilled for a while, and then after what must have been at least half an hour, bu
t it seemed a lot less, we heard the faint tones of KOT - Finally, the Tom de Neef remix. Well, I say faint tones, but in fact as we were sat under a speaker it was a bit hard to miss. That was the only bad thing about the club, the music was far too loud for my old ears in the seating area, but as I said before, you can't have everything, can you now. Anyway, who could resist such an anthem? Not us boys, certainly, and to the floor we scurried. And hence, the rest of the night was spent larging it to many fat tunes that the DJ spun, including, Alan Braxe - running, celeda vs salsa music, Johnny corporate - Sunday shouting and shakedown - at night. You may notice that these are quite commercial tunes, please don't let that fool you into thinking that this is a commercial night, for you would be wrong. The fact is that I'm a bit out of touch with all the new house releases and these were the only ones that I recognised. If you were to ask my mate Harry I'm sure he could reel off most of the tracks that they played at the night, but you wouldn't have heard of any of them, unless you too spend far too long listening to records as well. Saying that though, the music was great all night, a good mix of soulful us house, tribal rhythms and recent anthems, not too commercial, just how I like it. The music was so good I spent 2 ½ hours non stop on the dancefloor, which was nice.

I enjoyed my night at the Fez immensely and can honestly say that I will be returning in the very near future, because it was great. The crowd was chilled out, mostly drinkers rather than gurners, though there was no trouble, which is always nice. The club is brilliant, one of the best deigns that I have seen, and although I expect the capacity is only around 500 it seems a lot bigger and is easy to get lost in. I went on a Friday and the music was great, soulful us house mainly, and I think that they keep this music policy for Saturdays as well. On other days I think thi
ngs might get a bit funkier, but I assume they keep a no cheese policy, as all clubs should. If you get there early it's cheap to get in and the drinks don't break the bank as much as some of the other clubs around here, which is always a bonus. With different guest DJ's on every week you're in for a treat whenever you go, so what you waiting for? Get your fancy pants on and get yourself down to the Fez, you know it makes sense.
