Living in Buckinghamshire and always on the lookout for a varied and different night out I heard from friends that The Matrix was the place to go on a Saturday night. Now, to understand a bit about me you should know that I like hard house(amongst other things). The first time that I visited The Matrix was last year when they had a Miss Moneypennys guest night. Myself, my boyfriend and four mates piled into a minibus and proceeded to take the 11/2 hour journey to Reading. On our arrival we walked straight in(at 11pm). I'm never too sure whether this is a good or a bad sign. Upon entry, there is a long hallway leading to the main room, with other areas of to the left and the bar to the right. After our journey I needed to relieve myself so found the ladies. What everyone neglected to tell me is that they were in the process of moving the ladies and the gents around. Consequently there was still a urinal running opposite all our girly cubicles and the sinks. And no-one seemed to have told the blokes that their toilets had moved! I don't know about you but it is not my idea of fun to be looking at random strangers willies when I'm waiting for a cubicle to become available(well, maybe for a short while then!). However, in spite of this the night itself was banging, the bouncers were great(my boyfriend threw up on one of their shoes and they took him outside for a breath of fresh air and then let him back in-how many clubs do that?). The music was really hard & uplifting house and the crowd were fantastic. However, I visited self same club on the 5th May this year and it wasn't as good. The atmostphere was just as good and the peoplewere still friendly and "up 4 it" but the music seemed to have lost it's way. Also there seemed to be an awful lot more people that were just there for a late drink and too get as drunk as possible. If anyone was there in the main room-we were the nutters with the glow paint that ended up painting ha
lf the attendees flourescent green and orange! There seems to be more influence on the garage music these days, which isn't what I went there for. I know that this is a lucrative market these days but there are more than enough garage clubs on the scene already. On the plus side, they had sorted the toilets out! If anyone has been recently I would really appreciate their comments because on the strength of my last visit I won't be hurrying back.
The matrix is a top night out in reading. It is inexpensive for the line-ups that it attracts and students get discounts. The search is not that strict and dress code is usually anything goes. drinks are usually around £3 for a bottle and the music is pumping. the air conditioning in there is great so u don't sweat like an animal. The main dance floor is large and roomy and the music isn't defening. the chill out area usually plays garage and is great to sit on sofas and relax for a while and survey the crowd. I would recomend anyone to go as it caters for all kinds. It is not as big as some clubs but it can stand out as a top night out in reading.
