“ George Street, Hull. „
Except for the Tower, until quite recently, there was nowhere except the Room to go to and as most people in Hull are trendies, people tended not to go there. I, not being a trendy, decided to visit there for the first time a few months back and was amazed by the standard of this club night. Wednesday night is metal/punk/rock night and at around £2 it is excellent value, especially with doubles starting at about £1.50. The Room is situated in the town centre, close to everything. It's easy just to catch a bus from the Lawns or the university for around £1. Some clubs put on buses, but this way you can choose when exactly you want to go and you're in no danger of getting lost trying to reach the club (even if you have had one too many to drink). The selection of music is not the typical Papa Roach and Limp Bizkit that is frequently heard doing the rounds at alternative club nights throughout the country, rather more obscure and yet popular in an alternative way. You are bound to get a laugh as they usually play at some point in the night a song by Dick Cheese - usually a Mickey-take of Nirvana or Papa Roach. The Room also has a disadvantage though, for instance you really must wrap up warm as I don't think they have heard of heaters here. Of course it gets packed on the spacious dance floor, but still in the other areas you really need to dress sensibly (strange for a club!). Anyone that is not used to crowds of Goths and 80's metallers, then this probably isn't the place for you. Often the Room is filled with people over forty with Motorhead t-shirts on. Scary? Indeed. No-one will bother you though and there's nothing to say that you have to dress a certain way or anything. Most people that frequent the Room have no prejudices, which is ideal really. The Room really is worth a visit, if not just to indulge in the cheaply-priced beverages. Come on, try it, you know you want to!
Went into Hull on Friday night for the first time in ages. Had a few bevvies, then was looking around for a club that'd let me in without having to look like a Ben Shermanite. Stumbled on Room - hadn't been in a couple of years. Door staff very friendly - told us it was a hard house/ trance night. Only £4 - why not give it a try? Well, we did, and had a fantastic time. Cool tunes, chilled peeps and good doorstaff (for once). A relaxed and friendly time was enjoyed by all due to the great atmosphere. I would recommend anyone to give it a try. Laid back door policy and minimal staff 'interference' with anyone wishing to get enjoyably mashed. They should have the back room open with soothing vibes available for those who've overdone it, though... Give it a go. You won't be sorry. Just you see.
