Advantages: It's friendly, I had a good time

Disadvantages: Not many, umm.. the floor is slightly uneven in places

The first thing you notice about the Thekla is that it's a boat, this is fairly unusual because most bars are not boats. But saying that I did also go on a boat-bar in Newcastle once which had a revolving dancefloor just to add to the misery. The Thekla does not have a revolving dancefloor and I am glad to report that you will not need to take your sea-sickness tablets to travel on the good ship Thekla. You may wish to amuse yourself when you see a member of staff by looking very serious and asking if they have life-rafts and what the emergency procedure is. One of my female friends tried this with a member of bar staff and did not got thrown out, however if you are male and ugly and you try this you probably will get thrown out.

We decided to eat at the Thekla because we had vouchers for free pizza and we are very cheap. Unfortunately they had run out of pizza, so the night did not start off too brilliantly. However we did then order other food in it's place, and amusingly the chef asked to see my girlfriend (who had ordered salad WITHOUT the halloumi cheese) in order to pretend to shout at her for criticising his dish. So as you can see this place does not take itself too seriously, and I like that.

We then moved to the club section of the boat to see a gig, this is definitely an intimate venue, we chose to stand on the balcony section, and we were quite literally within spitting distance of the artist. This allowed the artist to interact with the crowd, resulting in a several hilarious conversations with, and I do not hesitate to say this, complete bumblling drunken morons. So the Thekla has no policy to stop bumbling morons getting in, but I'm sure they are working on it, along with ordering more pizza.

Overall this place has a nice feel, I would recommend anyone to go there. There are no chavs here, just friendly people, niche musicians, decent food, and you will not drown.

Summary: The Thekla, it's a bar that floats but don't worry it's not manned by seamen in tight white trousers

And of course, it has its own Banksy artwork on the outside... :)
