Advantages: Really Intimate, Sounds Great

Disadvantages: N/A

The Wedgewood Rooms, also known locally as 'The Wedge', is a small music and comedy venue located in Portsmouth.

The venue is excellent in the fact that it is really small (capacity 400), but still manages to attract big name bands due to its reputation. A ridiculous amount of quality musicians from the world of Rock, Indie, Punk and Metal have all performed at the Wedge - with the likes of Oasis, Travis, Kasabian and Bloc Party just to name a few.

Due to the small scale of the place, you can get up close and personal with the stars, and it's a photographers dream. Often you'll find the performers milling around in the audience at the end of a gig, which gives you a chance to chat with members of your favourite bands - I once had a word with Gary "Mantis" Lucas, the American guitarist and Grammy-nominated songwriter, after watching the excellent Magic Band a few years back.

What always strikes me about the Wedgewood Rooms is the consistently excellent sound quality. Bands just seem to sound really good there, which I suppose is testament to the sound-engineers and also the acoustics of the building itself.

Joined on to The Wedge is the 'The Edge' - also known as 'The Edge at the Wedge' - confused!?. This is a handy bar where you can have a quick pint before going next door for the gig. It also hosts live performances, but these are normally acoustic based, or feature local DJ's.

In summary, the Wedgewood Rooms is an excellent venue which sounds great and attracts top quality acts. I have seen a diverse variety of music here, and the place as a whole represents a good night out.

Summary: Top Bands, Small Building!

An interesting review for me - one of my sons once played there (and I went to watch, of course!)
