TJ's (Newport)
by sparksteroid
TJ's is mainly a rock venue for live bands in Newport, Gwent and made a massive impact on the music industry in the nineties though it is now closed due to the sad death of the owner, John Sicolo - there were also financial difficulties partly due to the recession. I'm actually surprised at some of the comments made in the other reviews ... of TJ's on this site, they are very biased opinions. Personally, I find calling a heavy metal fan a 'sweaty' to be small-minded and kind of offensive.
The club may have had times in their past where it did get extremely messy, mainly during the nineties when the whole heavy metal scene was alive, though was nothing like this in more recent years. TJ's started as a rock/metal club but progressed onto bigger and better things with John Sicolo even getting onto the panel at the Brit Awards.
TJ's has hosted performances from bands all over the world, some of them big and some of them not so well known. TJ's is also now a worldwide famous venue and it's claimed that even Kurt Cobain of Nirvana proposed to Courtney Love in the club. Some of my favourite all-time bands have also played there including The Wildhearts and Therapy?
Although the club can get dirty at times, it's not really different to any other club in Newport, it's just a bit darker and dingier in there which is expected considering the fact that they also cater for 'sweaties' (ahem). The atmosphere is always friend and I have only ever known a few small fights to ever break out there.
TJ's really has done a lot for the music industry including the whole TJ's In The Park thing which I once attended and I got see well-known bands such as The Damned play live. There is also now a TJ's In The Square gig taking place on 10th July 2010 in John Frost Square which sees bands from the nineties reuniting in memory of John Sicolo. Over 2,000 people are expected to turn up and there is a competition for young people being hosted alongside the concert to give youngsters a chance to showcase their talents. Cavern (Exeter)
by orchid1988
The Cavern in Exeter is a popular student (unofficial) night out on Saturday for the croud who don't just go dancing to club music. Moreover, it usually gets quite a large local audience. It was home to the first few Radiohead , and Muse performances and has a slight air of being the kind of place you find an undiscovered artist. ... Coldplay used to play there often in the ninties. Although, it gets quite a lot of famousish acts too!
The Cavern is what it's name claims, a dingy cellar made of old red Devonian stone beneath an old shop house. The drinks are fairly inexpensive (house doubles for £2, beer before nine £1). On the downside, there is no real selection of food, just bog standard mccoy type crisps and crackling. This wouldn't be so bad, but there are no food serving venues nearby (aside from Pitcher and Piano).
The bar staff are pleasant, they generally look a little punk rock. There are never enough places to sit on the busy nights, but this is usual in Exeter. The entire place has a slight youth club feel (I haven't yet decided whether this is good or bad). Nevertheless it does feel like a very authentic venue.
Perhaps the worst point about the venue, is the terrible terrible toilets, which is what gives the place the dingy smell. They never look clean! But if it's the slight hippy lack of cleasiness they are going for... I always get stamped and go around the corner to the pitcher and piano toilets. Read the complete review |

Liquid Nightclub (Cardiff)
by Typicalalex1
I have been going to Liquid for about 2 years now and so far I am yet to find anything there to put me off going.
There is an entry fee just like most nightclubs which is only a few quid but there one in Maidstone, which is the one I go to, offer free entry if you go to the other night club next door first, which is Jumping ... Jacks.
It is a very modern looking nightclub, funky looking chairs and special VIP pods that you can rent for the night.
They have all the usual drinks, beer, VK, WKD, shots and more. They also offer drinks to those who are stuck on driving duty for the night, like coke, water and J20.
The prices aren't exactly what I would call cheap, for a pint or WKD I think its £2.50 each, so you're not going to go out with a tenner and get drunk.
The music is the typical dance versions of all the latest songs and the classic dance anthems.
There are no drinks on the dance floor which may annoy some people but it stops people stepping on bottles and glasses and stops people spilling drinks on other people and causing fights.
The staff are very friendly and they keep the place nice and tidy.
It's quite a busy nightclub so you're not going to have any trouble finding people to talk to or try and pull :)
Easily the best night club in Maidstone and is easy access for those in the Medway towns. Read the complete review |
