Advantages: Delicious hot drinks ready in one minute, easy to clean & maintain, simple to use.
Disadvantages: Makes a little noise while making hot drinks, drinks can be expensive.
This Tassimo coffee machine comes in a large box and on the front was a label advising me that I could get £20.00 of free Tassimo T-disc drink pods when registering my device. I had to carry mine home without a car but fortunately its not a long walk so that's fine. I'm not actually sure of the weight of this as my kitchen scales are too small to hold this but I feel it must only be a kilo or two when empty so it wasn't unmanageable at all.
Upon opening the box I found some instructions, which I've kept for reference, along with the Tassimo coffee machine and a yellow cleaning disc to be used before making coffee for the first time. There is a cup holder that comes with this and this just literally sits in a designated area underneath where the coffee is poured from. This doesn't have to be clicked in to place or anything so this is easy to fit in place. The water holder fits in to place simply and it is very straight forward to do this.
When first opening this machine it took a good few minutes before I was able to use it. The serial number for my £20 free coffee was found underneath the bottom of the machine and fortunately I realised this before I started filling it up and using it.
This machine holds 2 litres of water and the water holder is simple to use. There is a handle that you bend up and click over a plastic strip to hold the dispenser with ease. There is a filter placed at the bottom of the water dispenser and there is a maximum indicator so that you know where to fill the water up to. I find it very simple to fill this up and it takes just a few seconds to do using the maximum indicator to make sure that I don't overfill this.
Cleaning this machine is simple. Just use the cleaning disc as you would a Tassimo pod and it will make sure that water is run through the coffee machine to clean it inside. It is advisable to do this at least 3-4 times when first setting this up otherwise a nasty taste is detectable, as my Mum learnt recently, and really this is so straightforward that I actually ran a full cycle of 2 litres of water through just to ensure that it was as clean as it could be. I use this cleaning disc once or twice a week if I have been making lots of coffee to keep my machine clean and hygienic at all times.
When it comes to actually making a coffee with this it is done with ease. Just lift up the coffee pod holder and then place the coffee pod in place. It is simple to see where the pod should go and once you click the holder back down in place there is a barcode reader that can tell what type of drink you are making and it will make sure that the water is the required temperature for the best quality drink. This also ensures that the right amount of water is used, as displayed on the front of each packet of T-disc pods, so that you can use the correct cup to hold the relevant drink. If you are making a drink such as a latte or a cappuccino then you will find that there are two discs to use, the coffee part and then the creamer part.
In terms of drinks available in the range there really is a huge variety. There are several Costa drinks available includding Cappuccino, Latte and Americano and they taste absolutely fantastic. There are also teas, coffees, hot chocolates and fruit teas available from branded companies such as Cadburys, Twinnings and Carte D'or. These can be bought in numerous places and supermarkets such as Tesco & Sainsburys sell some of the most popular coffees and drinks. I tend to buy my drinks from the Tassimo website as the shop has about 30 different types available at any one time which is perfect for me, also the prices are comparable to supermarket prices and there is free delivery on orders of £35.00 or more. I don't tend to buy standard tea such as the Twinnings English Breakfast as 16 drinks set you back about £4.00 and I feel that this is quite expensive when I can just buy nice tea bags for half the price and pour hot water over them from the kettle. The range of drinks is absolutely fantastic for this coffee machine compared to some others on the market and the availability of drinks is absolutely fantastic too.
I love how the water in this coffee machine just sits there cold and then you turn this on, insert a pod and then press the button. The average time for a drink to be prepared is under one minute, slightly longer for the two pod drinks such as the caramel latte macchiato. There is some noise when the machine starts working and I believe that this is where it is puncturing a hole for the water to pour through to make the perfect drink. When it comes to creamer there is a generous amount of froth produced and this just adds to the creamy taste of a latte.
The cup holder for this is simple to put in place, as I've already said, and there is a lever that you pull upwards or downwards to move the cup holder higher. As you do this you can put an espresso sized cup on the holder and prevent splashes as the cup is higher up. This is simple to use and when it comes to cleaning this it comes apart in two pieces and can be cleaned with ease.
Another feature of this machine, besides the fantastic drinks of course, is the option to add more water. When you put in the T-disc there is a light that illuminates and you then press this button for your drink to be made. Once the drink is being made the light flashes and then it moves over to the right hand side where you can press the button to add additional water should you want to. This isn't something that I use very often and I believe it stays illuminated for about 20 seconds before the original orange power light comes on and you can then open the pod holder and start making another drink. If you open the lid before the drink has finished or before it has gone back to the orange power light then you may find yourself sprayed with hot steam or hot water but there is a sticker warning as much on the unit and also there is a section in the instruction booklet.
In addition to the three lights, orange power light, drink in progress light and add additional water light there are two others. One is a light that flashes red to indicate that the water level is too low for another drink to be made and one is a light that indicates there is a problem with the machine. I have only had this light up once and when referring to the instruction booklet where it lists possible problems I was able to see with ease that the barcode reader needed a clean. When I opened the pod holder I could see that some coffee had dried on it and I was able to clean this in just a few seconds.
The instruction booklet was simple to use and understand and if I've needed to refer back to it I have always been able to find what I am looking for in a matter of just a few minutes.
This particular model retails for around £120.00 but in the past few months I have seen numerous companies offering this for between £60 & £80 including Tesco, Sainsburys and Amazon to name a few. These offers have been thick and fast in the past 2 or 3 months and so I'm glad that I got mine at such a low price that I haven't yet seen beaten.
It is fair to say that I love this machine so far and I don't see myself ever getting bored of it. I probably drink 2 or 3 hot drinks a day from this machine and I love that the pods come in their own packets that tell me the liquid size of each drink and the amount of calories in the drink too. When I am trying to be good but want something sweet I find one of the lattes a fantastic filling drink at under 90 calories and I don't see that ever changing. There is such a wide variety of drinks on offer that there is always something to keep me enjoying this machine. Cleaning the machine is easy and in general there isn't really anything that I can say bad about these drinks.
Some people find the prices of these drinks expensive but as I now take one of these to work in my Thermos travel mug there is no reason for me to find the drinks expensive as I'm saving a small fortune on Costa! The drinks, particularly the Costa ones, taste absolutely fantastic and I have only visited a coffee shop once since picking up this machine so it has already paid for itself and then some!
The noise from this machine may initially seem loud but it is simple to get used to this and when my husband is in the kitchen making a drink and I am in the bedroom of our apartment I am not able to hear him making his drink and that is good enough for me. I am going to rate this machine 5/5 and I am sure you can tell why from my very positive write up!
Summary: A fantastic coffee machine that makes delicious hot drinks every time.
