Advantages: Attractive design, very simple to both use and clean, keeps coffee hot for a decent period of time
Disadvantages: The lid is very loose
I very rarely drink coffee, although do keep some in for visitors, so when my daughter offered me a Bodum Brazil 8 Cup Cafetiere I decided I would be able to make use of it. The Brazil Cafetiere is available in three sizes; 3 cup, 8 cup and 12 cup. The design has also changed somewhat since the photograph above was uploaded, and the Cafetiere now comes in a range of colours and has a far sleeker and modern appearance.
My Brazil Cafetiere is Lime Green, but the selection of colours is very impressive and you're sure to find one to compliment the colour scheme in your kitchen.
The Cafetiere is not only attractive, but functional too. Brewing the perfect cup of coffee is extremely simple; as Bodum themselves state it really is just a case of measuring out your coffee, pouring on hot (not boiling) water and timing four minutes before pushing the plunger down. Simple even for a total coffee making novice such as myself.
The jug itself is made from 'borosilicate' glass, a particularly heat resistant glass which will not shatter or otherwise be damaged even by continual use. Of course, being heat resistant does not mean that the jug doesn't get hot - it does, and I certainly wouldn't recommend touching it for too long for fear of getting burned. The entire Cafetiere is suitable for putting in the dishwasher, I haven't done this personally as it's so incredibly easy to wash by hand but I can see why this would be useful for some coffee drinkers.
The handle is comfortable to hold and is fitted very snug to the Cafetiere, my only issue with the product as a whole is the fact that the lid is very loose. I have owned Cafetieres in the past and while never creating a perfect seal, most will at least have a lid which feels as though it is a tight fit. This one actually rattles at times, an indicator as to just how loosely it has been designed to fit. I do like the ball shaped handle of the plunger as this makes it simple to push down on, even for those people like me who suffer from a lack of strength in their hands.
In fact, overall I find the plunger to be extremely smooth and 'nice' to push down and this means the ground coffee will not escape the mesh and find its way into your hot drink.
I find this Cafetiere keeps the coffee hot for some time after brewing, obviously it will not remain piping hot for too long but if you are the type of person who likes a second cup of coffee straight after the first then I think you will be happy. Anyway, coffee is easily warmed up in the microwave so I wouldn't worry too much about leaving it to go cold.
After use it's a very simple matter to empty the coffee grinds (use them as a plant food for certain plants) and wash the jug. The grinds will wash away easily in hot soapy water, I tend to simply leave the Cafetiere in soak for a few minutes before rinsing with cold water. This will remove all residue of coffee and leave your Cafetiere sparkling clean and ready to use again.
There is another gripe (other than the loose lid), but I have left this to the end as it hasn't been something which has particularly affected me. The reason my daughter decided she didn't want the Cafetiere anymore was due to the fact that Bodum's estimation of eight cups is far different to hers. I can see her point, living in a mug-using household means you will only get at best four drinks out of a single brewing - and I suggest Bodum's calculations were made based on coffee lovers who use 'proper' small sized coffee cups.
This issue aside, I am more than happy with my Brazil Cafetiere. Costing £18 on Amazon I know it's fairly expensive, however the attractive design and ease of use makes it worth the cost in my opinion.
Summary: An excellent Cafetiere which has pride of place on my kitchen shelf.
