DeLonghi is an Italian company which has products on the market to improve the living comfort. Thus Delonghi is active in two different markets: air operations (air conditioning, humidifiers, heaters and many others), but also small domestic appliances (espresso's, electric ovens and much more). DeLonghi is famous because it meets the requirements of the customer and for its creativity and quality products. DeLonghi has become a worldwide reputation and is available in 50 countries.
After a good meal we can intensively enjoy espresso or macchiato with lovely frothy hot milk. Since we have the Delonghi ESAM 5500 Perfecta at home we do not have to get out the door for such a delicious cup, but we can have one whenever we want to make one yourself. There are basically three types of espresso machines. There are fully automatic espresso machines, semi-automatic espresso machines and Nespresso machines (with cups). Our espresso machine is a semi-automatic espresso machine. This means that you have a few options and so do you have thus somewhat effect on the taste of your coffee. You can obtain the amount of coffee, the pressure of the device (bar) and the water you use self-adjustment and control. This gives everyone the coffee he / she likes it.
The device has intrigued a coffee grinder, but works with both ground coffee and beans. The grinding of the integrated coffee grinder is adjustable, so you can change the strength of your espresso according to your own taste. The device has several automatic features so you can control the amount of coffee, water, frothed milk and the desired temperature. So prepare yourself a delicious cappuccino, caffe latte without a complex and lengthy preparation.
The cappuccino system of the device mixes steam, air and milk in the right proportion to make a creamy froth. It goes through a stainless steel nozzle which has a foam regulator, which you can determine the thickness. What I love about this machine is that you can also make just a simple cup of hot water for your tea.
Delonghi ESAM 5500 Perfecta is black and has stainless steel accents. Atop the unit is a metal-cup platform where you can warm the cups too. The reservoir for the beans has a capacity of 250g. It can take up to 1.7 liter of water.
We are very pleased with our espresso machine. We still have to think as well, whether it was worth our money. But we can enjoy every day our delicious espresso or macchiato. The machine is very easy to operate and it didn't took us long to figure everything out. You get instructions were everything is explained but the machine has a handy display with instructions of what to do making it a piece of cake. The machine costs around 400 pounds.
Delonghi Perfecta 5400 coffee maker
The Perfecta 5400 is a coffee making machine from the well established Italian manufacturer Delonghi. The product has a range of settings to make different styles of coffee and can accommodate a wide range of cup sizes. The processing power of the product was quick and can take both ground coffee and coffee beans. The appearance of the product is stylish in my opinion and the product had very few problems. I bought my machine from Comet UK to the price of £399.99.
In my opinion the 5400 Perfecta was very attractive and modern. The product had a weight of about 10kg which was sturdy but not too heavy to carry around for most people. The dimensions are 35x57x49 cm mean it is compact for most work surfaces. The product has a predominantly plastic construction but with some metal components too which achieve a nice balance. Colour wise, the product is a shiny smooth black, with a silver chrome type colour which look modern and clean. At the base of the product there is a flat surface to which you put your cups on, it can hold two cups at any one time. There is a chrome funnel which actually dispenses the milk to your cup and an LED display panel above this to the centre top. There are two chrome coloured pipes which dispense the coffee in liquid form just to the left of the milk dispenser. There are easy to press grey coloured touch buttons to the side of the screen. Towards the back of the product there is a power cord with a plug but before I purchased the product I read some people had a European plug which needed an adaptor, mine was a standard UK plug however and no adaptor was needed.
The product is able to take both ground coffee beans and the full ungrounded beans, I personally prefer the taste of the full beans but that is my personal preference. Towards the front the dispenser can move in that it will accommodate different sized mugs and cups which is always useful. The LED screen to the front is easy to read and illuminates when you set different settings up and looks very modern and clean. There are numerous buttons positioned around the screen that are easy to press and built into the display panel itself; they are not raised. There is no timer that comes with the product but there is a temperature controller, a dripping tray and a cup warmer. There are 7 different settings for the grinder component which is set by using the menu on the display screen. This adds lots of variety to what you can make and I've successfully made Cappuccino and Mocchiato coffees and the product was advertised at making other styles too. If you need to use already grounded coffee beans then you need to access a different menu of settings from the screen and it still works well although I mainly stick to using full beans. The product can dispense at a pressure of 15 bars which is very good in my opinion and I have had no problems with processing speed.
I've had the product for a good 15 months and the product still works very well. I read reports that Delonghi as a company are not very reliable with their customer service, however I bought my product from Comet UK and it came with a complementary warranty which I've not had to use yet. Although there are quite a few plastic components to the product, they are well made, tough and durable. The pipes and valves that dispense either the coffee or milk have not been blocked or corroded. The machine does not overheat and I've noticed no defects with the processing power decreasing over time. The LCD screen has not faded or fell victim to condensation and still provides a clear image. The touch buttons are responsive and this has not decreased over time. Overall I think the product is a stylish and very durable coffee maker, however due to the £400 price tag in the UK it would be sensible to get it covered by some sort of warranty.
Ease of Use
The product is easy to use in my opinion but it does take a little bit of time in applying the right settings to your personal tastes and the different styles of coffee. I find cappuccino very easy to make and can now set the machine up one in seconds. The buttons are easy to press and the product comes with a manual which has information on how to set it. Even though Delonghi is an Italian company there are well translated English sections in the manual which are easy to understand. Overall it may be a bit daunting choosing the right settings for the first time, but overtime it becomes second nature to use it.
The machine was not cheap, it cost me £399.99 from Comet UK but I think it has been a worthy coffee machine for the time it has lasted problem free. The product used to be sold on Amazon UK however it is not now and they are hard to come by even on eBay. With the few places that sell them I found comet at just under £400 the cheapest, numerous electrical stores sell the product for £500-£600 which is probably too much in my opinion unless maybe you have a restaurant or some catering business. Overall, not the cheapest but you do get what you pay for; a well made and high quality coffee maker.
Besides the high price of the product in the UK there are not many drawbacks to mention. I do think the water container inside the machine could be bigger, when you fill it I find it slightly small if you're making a large quantity of coffees. This was especially noticeable when I had a large group of friends over who were interested in trying the coffee. Another problem could be that I've read that Delonghi have poor customer service so it would be best to maybe get a warranty from a trusted UK retailer which would probably have repairs/parts delivered quicker. The settings do get easy after a while but I could understand if a person is having difficulty when they first get it. There are a wealth of settings such as temperature, grinder settings, dispensing settings which are daunting at first but will become easier the more you use it. As the manufacturer is Italian some of the coffee machines come with European plugs which need an adaptor to work in the UK, mine however came with a standard UK plug so I did not experience any problems.
To conclude I think the Delonghi 5400 Perfecta was a good investment. I prefer the handmade cappuccinos from the product as opposed to buying readymade coffee and would not go back in my opinion. You can make a near limitless variety of coffees with me myself, greatly preferring Cappuccinos and Mocchiatos. The processing speed of the product is fast and easy to use once you gain a bit of experience and confidence using the different settings. The LED screen is easy to use and you can give your coffee a frothy milk effect from the milk dispenser funnel to the right of the coffee dispensing components. The product can take a wide variety of coffee sizes and the drip tray prevents mess and liquid getting everywhere. The cup warmer feature is very useful as I prefer heated cups to cold non warmed ones. The product only had minor problems such as the water container inside the product being a bit on the small side and perhaps daunting settings for the first time user. The 15 bar pressure of the pressure makes coffee very quickly and efficiently and is just the right amount of pressure. Overall the 5400 perfecta makes superb cups of coffee and is great fun to use, couple this with a compact and stylish modern design and excellent durability and the 5400 is a top product from Delonghi. Thanks for reading my review.
