Having been living on cafetiere coffee with leaked in granules for too long, an upgrade was in order for my 21st birthday. So I chanced my biggest present request on one of these, and with 6 months of usage, I feel well prepared to write a review. First off, you are required to 'clean out' the machine by using plain water, and pouring this into the water compartment (at the top of the machine, under the metal top). you do this twice over, and voila! Ready to use.
It's important to not that washing up liquid should not be used at this point, or ever when cleaning your machine; simply because it can alter the taste of your coffee unpleasantly. This should be made clear in the instructions you receive. I personally don't even use it for the jug.
You receive a pack of two paper filters, and a permanent one. The permanent one has been absolutely perfect in it's functionality, so the paper filters have been unused. The filter is perfectly easy to remove and clean - I just pick it up (there is no funny lock or clip to fiddle around with) and shake out the excess, then rinse under a tap.
Your carafe is a wonderfully contemporary and kitsch 'diner' style offering. It comes with water measurements in coffee cup diagrams printed on the jug, which comes in useful when needing to measure how much to put into your water compartment. You also get a pretty useful measuring spoon; I use one scoop per cup of coffee I want to make.
The kMix also keeps your coffee warm for you whilst the switch is on, be aware the coffee starts to lose it's taste after about half an hour of this however. Useful if you want half a jug to yourself in the mornings!
The design is eye-catching, and comes in a range of beautiful colours (my own is Yellow). When I first caught a glance of this at a friends, I thought it was a far pricier offering. Expect lots of compliments, especially if you keep the metal shiny and polished (I only use water for this).
So all in all, no faults as of yet, delicious and well-filtered coffee with no sneaky granules, a function to keep it warm, a range of colours and a compliment magnet. Probably the best birthday present for a good, long while!
From the first time I saw the Kenwood kMix Coffee machine I knew that one day I would own one, I just loved the retro design and in my opinion looks far nicer than many of the other machines available.
One day I was in the reductions area of our local Makro store for a great price of around £40 so I didn't hesitate in buying it as it was at least £15 cheaper than I had seen it elsewhere.
My machine is the lovely bright blue colour (CM023) which really stands out compared to the stainless steel or black coffee machines available.
The machine is also nice and compact with a footprint of 25cm x 16cm and standing at 27cm tall. This was important when I originally purchased it as we didn't have much work top space in our kitchen.
The machine came with two filter papers when I bought it, although it does have a permanent filter with it so can be used without although I prefer to use it with filter papers - I use Melitta Classic Two Cup Coffee Filter Papers which are available from Tesco for around £1.20. By using filter papers it means I can just dispose of them when done rather then having to faff about cleaning the permanent filter.
Using the machine is very straightforward - fill up the water reservoir with enough water for your desired amount of coffee (I use the carafe), place your coffee into the filter, close the lid and switch on. For a one mug brew it takes less than two minutes. Obviously if you are making more it will take longer, but I'm trying to stick to one mug a day :-)
Due to the simplicity of the machine there is no timer function, however I have plugged it into a digital timer and successfully come downstairs to a pot of fresh coffee first thing in the morning.
Keeping it clean is fairly easy too, I just give it a wipe down with a damp cloth when it needs it. Giving the carafe and filter holder a wash in with the washing up - please note these aren't dishwasher safe so hand-wash them only.
Whilst it does have a cup warmer on the top of the machine, which does get hot it doesn't seem to make my mugs feel any warmer. Although it's not really a function I use so it isn't an issue for me.
I have noticed that occasionally the anti-drip valve, well drips but this seems to be remedied with a good clean so perhaps it suffers from a slight blockage.
There are 8 different colours available in this design from black to bright orange or magenta, so bound to be one that fits your decor.
I haven't had a coffee maker but since I am not allowed to drink milk anymore I decided it was time to invest in 'proper' coffee, so I purchased this coffee maker. Initially I didnt like the taste of black coffee but I made myself initially as I need the 'wake up' before my early starts. With this machine, I genuinally became to start loving black coffee. The taste is great which probably made me drink too much initially! The build quality is great and sturdy and does make a great coffee. It has a lovely finish and looks great stylish design. I love the cream colour and there is a black one available, although it was more pricey but I am delighted with this one.
It looks lovely in my kitchen and I even have my boyfriend using it! I find it easy to clean as well, which is great to know as thats one of the things you dont want to spend loads of time on when your in a rush in the morning. I must mention though, none of it is machine washable, although this is not a problem for me as it doesnt take long to wash. My friends love coming around to mine for a chat and coffee now and mine seems to be the place to meet now, which is great as I am always running late. I must admit my friend does have a coffee maker and maybe I am biased but my coffee does taste better, although I am not sure it is down to the machine or the actual coffee we buy. (Hope she doesnt read this!) It has saved me loads of money instead of buying coffee from Satrbucks all the time, its just a shame its so chunky otherwise I would try and take it out with me!lol
It is quick and efficent which I love, it is very simple to use as well which is a must.
I would say you can make 1 coffee or upto 3 mugs with this coffee maker. I believe this is made out of aluminium and chrome so as you can imagine, it definately does have a great build quality. The coffee also seems to stay walm for longer as well, which is great! I have definately not had any problems with this so far so I would suggest buying this.
I am sorry I cannot really compare this to others as this is my first one but as I have mentioned it does have a great build quality and looks great and overall I am really impressed!
Its difficult to know what to buy when it comes to a coffee maker as there is so many options, but if you want the stylish option which makes a great coffee then I would suggest you choose this one. There really is nothing I can say but positive things about this coffee maker. Most importantly it makes a great coffee, which I suppose is the info you really want!
