I bought this machine on the strength of the many other excellent reviews from customers here on dooyoo who are clearly much more expert than me about coffee machines. I am adding this review to say that if you're like me (i.e. a complete idiot in the kitchen), but want superb coffee, instantly with no hassle or effort, this is the machine for you. If I can work it, anyone can!
You cannot knock the looks either. I am very fond of retro gadgets and machines in my kichen and my Dolce Gusto blends in well. It's not as ugly or space consuming as some of it's competitors.
I have never been tempted to try any instant coffee machines and tend to rather spend a fortune on buying my cappuccinos in cafes everyday before going to work. But that is definitely a thing of the past. This machine is fantastic and so easy to use - even an idiot like me can throw a delicious cappuccino together after 5 minutes of unwrapping the box!
What about the price of the pods? Well, unlike spending the guts of £1.80 on a great latte or espresso in a cafe, pods for this contraption cost £2.99 for 16 pods! Not bad I hear you say, but there is a small catch. If you like cappuccinos, then you only get 8 cappuccinos out of a box of 16 because 8 pods are for the milk and the other 8 are for coffee. Whereas, if you like espressos, you get 16 pods of espresso exclusively. Having said that, if you get 8 cappuccinos for £2.99, this works out at only 37p each one - still a great bargain bearing in mind you are getting cafe-like quality!
All the coffee pod selections are delicious namely cappucino, espresso, lunghi (double espresso), latte, Chococino (hot chocolate). Unlike many rival machines, the coffee emerges piping hot and the pods are easily available from supermarkets. It even can do cold drinks such as Cappucino Ice. Also, it's so easy to use and clean. If you've been confused & somewhat depressed by very mixed reports on other machines, go for this without hesitation. It comes ready to go out of the box with a starter pack with cheaper, better drinks than coffee bars in your own home! Best money I've spent in a long time
PS I'm not sure if this says more about me than is wise but the machine passes what an old pal of mine used to call the 'hangover test' with flying colours: i.e. you can stagger into the kitchen at an ungodly hour and with bleary eyes & shaky hands, make professionally delicious & reviving coffee in seconds!
Finally, a few hints and tips for you:
If you are considering purchasing a machine. Register your machine at the Dolce Gusto website and they send you more free pods. Plus everytime you purchase pods (which seem only to be available at the main supermarkets - tesco, Asda, Sainsburys), there is a special code on the box of the capsules which you enter on the website to accumulate special points for more free coffee.
The website also sells cool Dolce Gusto accessories, like latte glasses, spoons, mugs and saucers - a good looking way to compliment that great coffee you have made. The special points may also be redeemable against these items.
Last but not least, Amazon are currently selling the machine cheaper than anywher else (around £70). For some strange reason the price of the machine increased by over 40% in most major shops (i.e. Argos, John Lewis etc.), after Christmas 2007 - when they cost just over £50!
Summary: If you like cofee, buy this!

- 17/02/08 I'm afraid I would only use this once or twice and then it would get relegated to the cupboard! Susan |

- 17/02/08 As the owner of the basic Nespresso machine it would be good to point out what other features this machine has. Im a bit confused over the cappucino flavour though - why are there only 8 coffee pods? What are the other 8 pods for in terms of use with milk? Does this machine not have a frother gun built in? A bit more info on using the machine, cleaning it and general maintenance will however inform future consumers. |
