Advantages: This cafetiere is easy to use and looks very nice, it is easy to clean and makes a nice cup of coffe
Disadvantages: You may think it is pricey when you can buy cheaper cafetieres
While I do not drink a lot of coffee myself I do like a nice cup of Lyons fresh coffee now and again so invested in a La Cafetiere coffee maker for the odd occasion when I fancy a coffee or if my daughter is visiting. It cost me £25 which I thought was expensive for a cafetiere but this one has definitely proved itself as a very good one.
It is a very attractive cafetiere being mostly glass with quite a small amount of chrome making up a pretty 'frame' around the glass jug. I like the lid because the last cafetiere I had had a flat lid and I found it awkward sometimes to prise the top off especially when my arthritis was bad. This one has a dome shaped lid which is very easy to lift off. My La Cafetiere coffee maker looks lovely sitting on my kitchen shelf when it is not in use.
The plunger mechanism is very smooth and I thought it was easy to push all the coffee down to the bottom leaving me with a smooth rich coffee. Unlike cheap cafetieres this one doesn't leave any bits of coffee in my hot drink and I do not get any black sludge at the bottom of my cup.
This cafetiere is very stable because it stands on 4 small chrome feet which gives the coffee maker a good base, my previous cafetiere had just 3 feet and it always looked a little bit wobbly for me and if I ever knocked it even slightly it would stand there looking like it wanted to fall over.
I like the handle because it is a nice shape for my hand, it is a sort of curved square handle that does not sound comfortable to hold but it is. It is also very easy for me to control the pouring of my coffee by making little adjustments to my hold on the handle. The handle does not get hot at all when I am making myself a cup of coffee so there is no danger of me burning myself. I also think the handle helps to take the weight out of the cafetiere when it is full because it has such a wide gap between the 2 ends of the handle. This La Cafetiere coffee maker can be a little bit heavy for me to lift when my arthritis is playing up but I always manage and I think someone without my problems would have very little difficulty in lifting and pouring it.
The lid fits nice and snug and the handle is fitted very well so I do not worry that it can come off and cause me to break my cafetiere. I also like that the spout is very accurate and I do not get drips of coffee all over my worktop, it doesn't spill at all and the cafetiere is well balanced so that I can pour myself a cup of coffee without splashing myself.
The glass jug is fairly thick and made to be heat resistant so I could tell as soon as I took it out of the box that it was a high quality cafetiere and I think this makes the coffee taste more rounded than if you use a cafetiere with glass so thin that tapping it with a pencil could cause it to shatter. Plus I have 3 cats who love to climb so the thicker the glass the better for me.!
When I come to wash it I found the coffee bits are very easy to rinse out of the cafetiere and I put these in my compost bin. The cafetiere just needs a wipe out with a damp cloth and then rinsing in hot water to clean it except for when I have used richer flavoured coffee because these leave a little scum on the inside of the jug and then you might need to leave it to soak to avoid marks on the glass.
I think I made the right choice with this La Cafetiere coffee maker. Mine makes 4 cups at a time and that is perfect for me although I do sometimes just use it to make 2. YOu can also buy larger cafetieres in this range that make 8 cups or the huge one that my daughter owns which makes 12 cups of very good coffee. I do not know if these cafetieres can go in the dishwasher but I suspect they would be alright because I cannot see anything which would cause a problem.
Summary: A sturdy and very good cafetiere even for someone who doesn't drink much coffee
