La Cafetiere Rainbow Cafetiere
Advantages: Easy to use, easy to clean, looks great
Disadvantages: 3 cups - really a mug and a bit
We occasionally visit a local town's market on a Saturday morning and it was a couple of years ago we came across a stall I can't get my fiancé away from, it's a fresh tea and coffee stall. I love the smell of freshly made ground coffee and very occasionally enjoy a small cup of it but my fiancé loves it and is always wanting to get the cafetiere out but finds only him drinking it. We have a fairly big one which does a good four mugs which is far too much for him. It was on a trip to the tea and coffee stall last year we took notice of his lovely small cafetiere's he had got in. I loved the stylish look of them; one would look perfect in our kitchen. So I was quite happy for my fiancé to buy one. He has a wide range of colours in his stock but leaving it up to my fiancé we ended up with black one but I have to admit it does look good.
The initial impressions of the La Cafetiere rainbow cafetiere 3cup mug were it felt and looked good quality. It looked small and dinky and the large curved handle on the side felt good in your hand. The two strips of glass on the sides of the cafetiere and the silver plunger with a lovely small black ball on top gives it a contemporary feel. I knew it would look good in our kitchen and would be great in any ones else's.
The cafetiere stands at roughly nineteen centimetres tall with the plunger down. The outside has a black enamel effect finished wrap around it with the heat resistant glass container inside. It has a large solid handle to the side making it easy for any size hands to hold the small cafetiere. It has a steel plunger which does come apart for washing. This cafetiere is not recommended for a dishwasher but I find it relatively easy to wash by hand. The three small discs that make the bottom of the plunger easily unscrew to make sure you get all the coffee grains washed away.
The cafetiere says it holds 350ml (12 fluid ounces) and serves three cups. Realistically this is more like three espresso size cups. My fiancé can get a good size mug out of a full cafetiere and have a little bit left over for a top up. I would personally say this size cafetiere is perfect for one person. The La cafetiere rainbow collection does have an eight cup size which I bought for the mother in law and that is more for an after dinner with a group of friends to bring to the table.
The rainbow collection does follow its name there are a rainbow of colours to choose from. Of course it does depend where you buy it from but the market stall we bought it from had a very good selection of colours to choose from. For a few colours there is black (like ours), red, cream, white and more. I have seen in some places these are available as a gift set with two stylish enamel cups. They do look quite small cups so maybe these would be the ideal size for this cafetiere.
To make a perfect cup the instructions say to:
Preheat the cafetiere with warm water
Then add one dessert spoonful of fresh coffee per cup
Add hot water and replace the plunger and lid not pushing down
Leave to stand for about four minutes
Then gentle push the plunger down
Now it's ready to serve as you like it.
We have found the cafetiere very easy to use. The plunging action is easy and smooth and doesn't feel stiff even on the first go. As I have mentioned my fiancé usually uses it for just him and has a mug and then tops it up. We have both found that it remains warm for a good length of time when left in the cafetiere which I feel is down to the enamel wrap on the outside. Since buying this item it has been used many times and has remained in perfect condition. I feel it is a robust cafetiere that will last for a long time to come. We have had no problems with coffee grinds escaping this cafetiere makes a good coffee of course it does depend whether you buy a good coffee in the first place!
Since we bought ours over a year ago I have seen them become available in many shops and they seem to be very popular. The price does range from shop to shop. Amazon currently has a few colours in stock for about £14 but I would say it would be worth a look around. I did notice recently our local garden centre was selling a small range of them. I can't remember exactly how much we paid for ours I think it was around the £12 to £13 mark. We still go to our local market and from time to time buy fresh coffee to go in the cafetiere.
