We were looking for an espresso machine to replace our filter coffee maker at home as wanted something a little more versatile. We came across the Oster in the Curry's clearance for £100 (RRP was £250 at the time) and it met all of our requirements.
Unpacking and Setting up: Inside the box was the main machine, a milk container with steaming lid, a water container and a portafilter with single an d double espresso baskets and a basket for pods and sachets, also a plastic scoop and tamper multi-tool. Everything came wrapped in plastic and Polystyrene, and needed a quick rinse before first use. It was simple to put together with easy to follow quick start guide which talked you through installing the parts and priming the machine ready for use.
Using the Machine: The Machine is very easy to use with presets for singla and double espresso, cappuccino and latte, and custom options for longer drinks or cup sizes not suitable for the presets. To make a coffee you need to fill the water and milk containers and power on the machine, the lights on the machine then flash until it is ready to go when they turn solid, the water is quick to be ready and the milk steamer takes around 30-60 seconds to prime. The scoop measures around a single shot of ground coffee which is loaded into the basket on the portafilter and tampered down, the portafilter is then locked in position. Lastly choose your preferred coffee, if using a preset then a single press does a single measure and pressing twice does a double measure. holding the button down for 3 seconds will use the custom options allowing for you to make a long black coffee, just steamed milk or a combination to suit your tastes. The amount of froth from the milk steamer is adjustable via a dial on the milk containers steam lid and the spout from which the milk comes is adjustable to allow for various mug sizes. The cups sit on a overflow tray and there is a step up drip tray for espresso or smaller cups. The machine comes with a self clean function for the milk steamer by filling the container with water it steams through and clears the system of milk. It is recommended that you Delime the machine regularly and this is done with White vinegar in the water container and using the machine.
Overview: Overall a good machine, easy to use and clean and the coffee is comparable to other home espresso machines. The advantage of this over others is that the milk is steamed and dispensed automatically so there is no need to self steam or have a seperate milk heater frother. If using standard 330ml mugs the double cappuccino is a bit of a short measure and the double latte comes close to overfilling the cups but the custom controls are just as easy to use and allow you to stop dispensing with another touch of the button once your cup is full. Only improvment that I would make is to buiold in a coffee grinder as currently you need to use pre ground or have a seperate machine on your kitchen. Would and have recommended this to others.
