Douwe Egberts Continental Dark
Advantages: a good choice for company
Disadvantages: I prefer a milder coffee
I don't normally drink instant coffee very often as I have a Nespresso machine, and I much prefer to make an espresso using a Nespresso coffee capsule and then turn this into a latte, a cappuccino, or an iced latte. However I always like to have a jar of instant coffee in the cupboard in case of emergencies; for example if I've ran out of coffee capsules, or if I'm running late in the morning and I need my morning caffeine fix as quickly as possible.
My instant coffee of choice is always Mellow Bird's, I do normally prefer a milder and much more mellow tasting coffee, and so we always have a jar of Mellow Bird's in the cupboard. More often than not we also have a jar of a stronger instant coffee in the cupboard as well, as although my husband will drink Mellow Bird's he does think that it's too mild and he does prefer a stronger tasting coffee. He normally picks up the jar of 'stronger' instant coffee himself if he's in the supermarket, and the coffee he picked up recently was the Douwe Egberts Pure Indulgence Dark Roast coffee (previously just called Continental Dark). We've had this a number of times previously, and it's one that he chooses fairly often, I guess it's one of his favourites. This normally retails for around £3.50 for a 95g jar if not on offer, ours came from Tesco where it's currently on offer at £3.00.
Douwe Egberts Pure Indulgence Dark Roast is as the name would suggest a dark roast coffee, and according to the jar has a flavour strength of 4 out of 5, with 5 being the strongest and darkest roast. Although it is quite a strong and full bodied tasting coffee, especially compared to my favourite Mellow Bird's! it isn't too strong and overpowering. It isn't a bitter coffee either, it has quite a smooth and rich coffee taste to it, and it leaves no unpleasant aftertaste at all either. This also has quite a lovely rich and smooth coffee aroma to it too.
Although this states that it's suitable for drinking at any time of the day, I personally think that for me it's more of a morning, lunchtime, or afternoon coffee. I find that it's too strong to drink in the evenings as it will just keep me awake that night. My husband doesn't drink it in the evenings either, but that's purely because he prefers a glass of red wine in the evenings! The exception to this is if we have friends over in the evening then I would give them a mug of this rather than a mug of Mellow Bird's as I know that most people are not Mellow Bird's fans. We have had a few people comment and ask which instant coffee we use as it's so nice when I've served them this coffee, so I guess that it's a good choice of instant coffee to have in. Although I do like this coffee and I will drink it, I have to say that I do prefer the milder and creamier taste of Mellow Bird's.
