Douwe Egberts Pure Gold
Advantages: Tastes lovely & attractive packaging..
Disadvantages: It's more expensive than other brands..
I love my coffee and usually have a few cups each morning. Over the years I have tried out several brands and a variety of these have been 'premium' type brands whilst others have been more budget offerings. Many of the more 'premium' brands that I have tried - and liked - have been from the well known 'Douwe Egberts' brand of coffee products.
Taking advantage of a recent supermarket deal in a local branch of Tesco, I purchased a 100g jar of Douwe Egberts Pure Gold Coffee. I paid £2 for the jar, which is normally priced at £3.59.
The packaging for most - if not all - of the items in the Douwe Egberts brand has quite a sleek, elegant look to it and to me the products look to be of a premium, almost luxurious quality. In the case of the 'Pure Gold' coffee that I purchased on this occasion, the jar is made of glass and has a very distinctive lid to it. There is no plastic, circular screw-off lid on this particular coffee jar which is what I would normally expect from a jar of coffee. In this case, the lid is made of very thick, robust glass and it sort of 'slots' into the opening at the top of the jar. The thick, chunky design of the jar and of course the glass lid on top make the jar look quite impressive overall and I have found that the jars for this brand of coffees can be reused once the coffee has been finished. I think that they make ideal storage containers for teabags and lentils and a whole host of other dried foodstuffs.
Anyway, the coffee itself is a pale brown colour and the granules look to me to be of a very high quality as they are quite large in their size and there is very little powdery residue evident among the little fat granules. There is also a lack of powdery substance lingering at the bottom of the jar which is a definite plus point for me personally as I find this quite off-putting.
When I take the lid off the jar I find that the aroma of the coffee is instantly evident, which gives me the impression that the coffee is going to be quite strongly flavoured. The smell is very pleasant and it seems to be quite rich and aromatic.
Making the Douwe Egberts coffee is very simple and requires the same process as every other brand of instant coffee that I buy regularly. All I need to do is spoon the required amount into a mug and add hot water from the kettle. The granules should begin to dissolve immediately, but a little gentle stirring doesn't do any harm and as I like to add sugar to my cup of coffee I prefer to stir the coffee quite a few times to ensure all of the granules have been dissolved and my sugar has been absorbed into the coffee. This whole process takes a mere moment and then I can sit down to enjoy my hot cuppa.
Whilst making the coffee I am aware of the initial scent I had been aware of evolving slightly and becoming slightly more full-bodied and certainly much richer than it had been previously. The appearance of the coffee seems to be quite dark - I can't see the bottom of my mug once the water has been added to the granules. The appearance and the aroma of the coffee prove to be a winning combination and I feel that they are both appetising in their own way.
The Douwe Egberts Pure Gold coffee is extremely satisfying when I drink it. I find that the aromatic flavour that was evident from the coffee's granules when I was preparing the drink is evident in its taste and flavour too and it doesn't disappoint on any level. The flavour is very full-bodied and quite rich to me and it most definitely tastes like a good quality coffee product and is without the bitter after-taste that is often present with a cheap or more 'budget' brand of coffee granules.
I find the taste of the Douwe Egberts is rich enough that I don't need to use a huge heaped teaspoon of granules to achieve my preferred balance of flavour or taste, so the product is perhaps slightly more economical in this respect. Nevertheless, one must bear in mind that the original selling price for the 100g jar of this particular coffee was £3.59, and this is slightly over my own budget for such an item. For a treat, or for a special occasion I wouldn't think twice about purchasing this particular brand over any other, and of course when it is available at a discounted price then I will do my best to stock up on the coffee, but I must admit that for an everyday household coffee the price tag for this particular product is too high for my shopping budget. This is probably not helped by the actual quantity of coffee that my husband and I can get through in a week!
Overall, I really enjoy drinking the Douwe Egberts Pure Gold coffee and think its taste and aroma are very rich and quite delicious. I won't be deducting any marks from the overall product rating for the slightly inflated price tag of the coffee as I feel it is a rather more luxurious coffee product and is therefore justified in being more expensive than more basic, 'everyday' brands. I would recommend it to coffee lovers and addicts alike!
There is a range of coffee available from the Douwe Egberts brand which can be found in all good supermarkets such as Tesco and Sainsbury's.
Summary: A premium coffee product that is justified in being quite expensive.
