Douwe Egberts Pure Gold
Advantages: Silky smoothness, great taste and aroma, reasonable price, good quality.
Disadvantages: Not the usual screwcap lid, original price was a little expensive.
I don't usually drink Douwe Egberts coffee as I am more of a tea and cappuchino person. The recent offer in my local Morrisons store was a half-price deal, £6.59 down to £3.29, they are now still on offer at a new price of £4.50 for the 200gram jar, which I think is still very reasonable. The reason for me trying this coffee was the big price discount - I am now hooked!
There are a number of varieties but I opted for the Douwe Egberts Pure Gold as it was on a huge pallet display at the front of store. As I am a staff member I get 10% discount, so it made sense as a good buy! I generally look for good quality cheaper brands, but with this coffee you can't go wrong, a good price and a good brand.
I have always added sugar to my coffee when I drink it, but with this particular one I havn't needed to use as much sugar as it doesn't have the bitter aftertaste you sometimes get with the cheaper quality brands. The coffee has an inviting rich gold tone to it and once mixed with water and a splash of milk the aroma is even more inviting. The coffee tastes very smooth with a lack of bitterness and doesn't have any cheap unnatural flavours to it. The golden nugget granules dissolve quickly in hot water and I love the simplicity of the product.
The jar isn't as plain or boring as most other brands, but the downside is the lid. The cap of the jar isn't easy to pull off due to its glass construction and the fact it has a smooth finish to it. I can imagine older people having difficulty getting into the jar, particularly upon initial purchase. Once the suction seal has been used a few times it is a little easier to access, and in all fairness it is probably a better lid than some of the screwcaps available.
For a premium brand I think the new pricing is very reasonable. I am also happy to display the jar in my kitchen as it isn't a supermarket home brand. Ultimately the taste is everything and i love the aroma this coffee gives off. There are no real negatives to this coffee and I will be trying the other Douwe Egberts varieties in due course.
Summary: Grab a bargain whilst you can.
