Advantages: Lovely taste
Disadvantages: Not a lot
~ ~ Those of you who have been around dooyoo for a while will know that the ‘mad cabbie’ has two major addictions these days. The bad one is the old nicotine (my beloved rollups) and the second is coffee; lots of it, and taken VERY strong and sweet.
Short of hopping on a plane and flying out to my favourite Continental location, Italy, where they make the best cup of coffee in the whole world, I make do a lot of the time with an Italian ground coffee called ‘LavAzza’, which combined with my magical little Russell Hobbs Classic coffee maker makes a cuppa that is nearly (if not quite) as good as the real Italian original.
~ ~ But it’s not always practical to make percolated coffee all of the time, so like most other people, I often drink the instant variety.
Up until recently, my favourite instant was Nescafe Gold Blend, which I thought was as good as it gets with coffee out of a jar. But never one to turn my nose up at a good recommendation, I purchased a jar of another variety, ‘Kenco Really Rich’ after reading a glowing opinion about its merits by another member here at dooyoo (and Ciao) ‘snappy’ (Keith) back at the beginning of the year.
To my certain knowledge, I’d never drank it before, despite finding their TV commercials very good and fairly amusing. You know the ads I mean.
Where the girl is out buying coffee beans at the plantation, and the fella asks if he shouldn’t be speaking to the boss, (she IS the boss!) and tries to fob her of with an inferior batch of beans. And the other one in the boardroom, where the lass has just taken over as boss, and the supercilious male board member doesn’t even realise that he’s drinking an ‘instant’ coffee.
Keith recommends that you should try his ‘nose test’ when you are buying an instant coffee, to make sure that it has that ‘real’ coffee aroma.
Well, let me tell you that I d
id just that, and he is absolutely spot on. Kenco really DOES smell like a good coffee should. In fact, I’ll have to tread carefully or I could easily end up with yet another addiction, and I’d look a bit strange driving around in my taxi all day with a jar of Kenco stuck up to my snout!
~ ~ I take my coffee in a standard sized mug, with two and a half teaspoons of coffee, and three and a half teaspoons of sugar. (In fact, I’m taking a break right now from writing this opinion, as I’ve just got the urge for another mug!)
OK, I’m back, and the Kenco tastes as good as ever. In fact, unless someone told you differently, I reckon you’d be very hard pushed to tell the difference between Kenco and a ground coffee. They advertise on the jar that Kenco is a “superior quality instant coffee” and that they only use the very finest Arabica coffee beans in its production. I believe them! And it’s not too often I take what companies say on face value!
~ ~ Pricewise it isn’t too expensive either.
I bought the 100 gram jar in one of my local Supermarkets (Superquinn) and paid only €2.94 (£1.80 Sterling) compared to the €4.05 (£2.49 Sterling) I have been used to paying for Nescafe Gold Blend in the same size.
There’s a big yellow label round the top of the jar that states it’s currently on sale at 20% off the Recommended Retail Price, but this offer seems to have been on the go permanently since I first started buying it.
Even with 20% added to the price, it would still be cheaper than Gold Blend, so it really is excellent value for money.
So it gets a very strong recommendation from the ‘mad cabbie’.
And thanks to ‘snappy’ for putting me onto it in the first place.

Footnote. Since writing this opinion, I have since discovered the delights of yet another K
enco blend of coffee, their ‘Colombian Blend’. So look out for another opinion soon.
