Maxwell House Cappuccino
Advantages: Quick and easy preparation, lots of froth
Disadvantages: Bland coffee taste, tastes too sweet for me even considering it is supposed to be sweetened
I first tried instant cappucccino powders when I actually wanted them to use in an unusual muffin recipe. The original recipe wasn't that fantastic, so I kept the rest of the coffee packet in my cupboard for a couple of months. Reading a review of a similar product reminded me I had them stashed away and I decided to try them for the purpose they were made for!
I had bought the Maxwell House brand because it was available in the 99p store. You can buy both sweetened and unsweetened versions, and I have the first. I always like to add sugar to my coffee but I usually try to buy unsweetened products so I can addd as much sweetener as suits me personally. However, the sweet version was the only one in stock at the time so I bought that. I haven't drank Maxwell House coffees of any other kind for as long as I can remember but I thought they were a well known brand and the quality would probably be reasonable.
The cappuccino portions come in single serve blue sachets that are easy to tear open. You get 8 in a box. They are said to be mug sized servings, and for once that is actuallly correct. They fill the mugs up nicely, and not just with froth, although there is plenty of that. Making the drink is very easy as it just involves taking the contents of one sachet and tipping into a mug followed by some almost boiling water. Very simple, and it means you could take a sachet to work with you if you wanted something different during your teabreak. A sachet would travel well without leaking as the plastic is quite robust and each portion is securely sealed.
The powder looks like a caramel coloured hot chocolate mix. It smells of coffee, but doesn't have that rich roasted aroma that other types do. This means it didn't smell as mouthwatering as I thought it would, coffee being one of my favourite scents. I thought the scent was also weaker than expected when it was made up. Nevertheless, the drink looked good. There are no chocolate sprinkles/powder in the box, which I noticed some other brands do have. I think this would have been a nice finishing touch but I could have added my own if I really wanted to. The box promises "long lasting thick 'n' milky froth" which the product definitely delivered. The froth is there without any effort on my part such as whisking, and some remains in the bottom of the mug when I am finished. I am always disappointed if my foam disappears before I have got halfway through my cup. Beneath that is the coffee, and sadly I didn't think that was anywhere near the best I have tasted. I found it weak and watery tasting, and it didn't really satisfy my early morning coffee craving. It also tastes too sweet, even considering I normally add sugar to my own drinks. The drink was smooth, with none of the lumps you sometimes get in instant drinks but that is the best I can really say about it. I noticed that sugar is in fact the largest ingredient, where as instant coffee accounts for just under 10% of the contents. This makes the strong sugar/low coffee taste understandable, but no less disappointing!
I have a Nescafe instant cappuccino powder to try, a well as some flavoured ones from a Polish deli, and I hope they prove to have a stronger taste. There is no doubt that the Maxwell House version is quick and easy to make, and the froth is good. But the main point for me is to enjoy the taste of the coffee and it is far too bland to satisfy me. For that reason, I woudn't buy this particular product again, even considering the low price I paid. I have seen them it for sale for £2 in my local corner shop, and if I had paid that price I would have been more annoyed!
Summary: A good froth but not a great coffee underneath
