Advantages: delicious mild and mellow tasting coffee
Disadvantages: may be too mellow and mild for some tastes, hardly ever see it on offer
I don't normally drink instant coffee very often as I have a Nespresso machine, and I much prefer to make an espresso using a Nespresso coffee capsule and then turn this into a latte, a cappuccino, or an iced latte. However I always like to have a jar of instant coffee in the cupboard in case if emergencies; for example if I've ran out of coffee capsules, or if I'm running late in the morning and I need my morning caffeine fix as quickly as possible.
My instant coffee of choice is always Mellow Bird's, I think this stems from the fact that I grew up drinking Mellow Bird's as this as this was the instant coffee that my mum always bought, in fact it still is as she still buys it now. Most supermarkets seem to sell Mellow Bird's, however I have to admit that I very rarely see it on offer anywhere. It's normally just over £2 for a 100g jar.
Mellow Bird's is as the name would suggest a very mellow and mild tasting coffee, so if you are after something tar like which you can stand your spoon up then then this ain't for you. My father in law drinks absolutely industrial strength coffee (which is definitely tar like, and it wouldn't surprise me if you could actually stand your spoon up in it) and he won't touch a mug of Mellow Bird's at our house, in fact he brings his own supply of coffee in a small food bag and drinks this instead!
I absolutely love the taste of Mellow Bird's, yes it is a bit wimpy and mild, but it has a really delicious and mellow (haha) taste, and I think a slightly rich and creamy taste. It doesn't have a bitter coffee taste at all, and it leaves no unpleasant aftertaste at all either.
I always used a heaped teaspoon of the coffee powder in a large coffee mug, which I then fill to around three quarters full with boiling water, and then I fill the remaining quarter of the mug with skimmed milk. I like milky or creamy coffee, rather than strong espresso type coffee, and I think that's probably why I like Mellow Bird's so much as the coffee itself has that slightly rich and creamy taste which lends itself really well to milky drinks.
My husband isn't as keen on Mellow Bird's as I am, he thinks that it's too mild and he would normally prefer a stronger coffee. He does drink it though, although occasionally he will pick up a jar of a stronger instant coffee for a change.
